Hugh opened his phone, glanced at the photo Megan had sent, then turned off the screen.
When Megan saw Hugh had no reaction, she pressed on.
“Hugh, I was afraid you wouldn’t believe me if I just told you. That’s why I took a photo to show you. But honestly, they were way more intimate than what you see in that picture.”
She kept going. “I really thought your wife loved you. I had no idea she was pushing so hard for the divorce because of this guy.”
Hugh’s voice was flat. “You called me saying you had an emergency. This is what you wanted to tell me?”
Megan froze, totally caught off guard by his question.
Scrambling to recover, she rushed to explain, “That’s not it, Hugh. My symptoms have been getting so much worse -that’s why I’m here. Your wife… I only mentioned that because it came up.”

treat you. I’ll arrange a time with her and bring you there myself.”
Megan’s heart skipped. Even going through the divorce, Hugh was still thinking about her.
She put on her sweetest voice. “Hugh, thank you so much for helping me. I’ll go home and wait for your call. I won’t bug you anymore.”
Hugh watched Megan leave.
He leaned against his car door, completely drained, and lit a cigarette.
Opening his phone, he stared at the photo Megan had sent, frustration eating at him.
The house without Bethan-he couldn’t stand going back there.
He wanted to race over to the Olsen family home to find Bethan right now.
But he couldn’t think of any excuse to see her.

some excuse first.
Hugh slumped against the car door, feeling, totally helpless, tilting his head back and closing his eyes.

Early the next morning, Hugh came to the hospital to find Bethan.
Watching Bethan’s car slowly pull into a parking space, Hugh opened his door and got out.
Bethan stopped dead when she saw Hugh.
Hugh stared at Bethan’s lightly made-up face, completely mesmerized.
She looked amazing-nothing like a woman who’d just gone through a divorce.
Holding out the breakfast in his hand, Hugh said, “Your favorite sandwich.”
Bethan tucked a strand of her long hair behind her ear And didn’t take it. “No thanks. I’m living with my parents3

morning.”
Hugh’s hand holding the breakfast dropped to his side.
He’d gone two blocks out of his way to buy this breakfast for her, and now it was pointless.
Hugh felt completely powerless.
“Is there anything else?” Bethan asked.
Hugh forced himself to speak. “This afternoon I’m bringing Megan over. Remember what you promised me -you have to help me hypnotize her.”
Bethan glanced around, then lowered her voice. “I’m not seeing patients this afternoon. Wait for my call.”
After speaking, Bethan said hi to a colleague nearby and walked away with them.
Hugh watched Bethan leave with her colleague, and even after she completely disappeared, he couldn’t look away.
It hit him that somewhere along the way, he’d lost all his privileges’ with Bethan.

Bethan barely made it through her office door before Tristen shoved another case file at her. “Youngest Triple Crown Best Actor,” she said flatly. “He’s in slightly better shape than Mr. Locke was initially, but his family’s
a complete nightmare. You’ll want to read this one carefully.”
Bethan took the file. “Don’t worry, Tristen. I love taking on the ‘difficult cases’ that nobody else wants.”
Tristen gave her an approving look. “There’s something else.”
He went on, “The TV station has this medical education program―completely free to the public. But it’s a good opportunity. Could help build your reputation and boost the hospital’s image. I think you should do it.”
Bethan had never been on TV before and hesitated.
“Tristen, do you really think I can handle it?”
Tristen couldn’t help but laugh. “Bethan, you can doubt yourself, but you can’t doubt my judgment. If I say you ednl do it, you absolutely can.”

Bethan smiled too. “Back when I was fearless and didn’t know any better, your faith in me got me to where I am today. I might not trust anyone else, but I totally trust you, Tristen.”
TV exposure was no joke-it was fast, massive, and everywhere.
If she could pull off free educational programming on TV, she wouldn’t just be building a good public image. She’d be launching both her own reputation and the hospital’s straight into the stratosphere.
Such a good opportunity-Bethan definitely couldn’t pass
it up.
After a crazy busy morning, at lunchtime Bethan got a call from Gwen and came to a restaurant near the
hospital.
Fiona and Gwen had already ordered for her.
Bethan paused. “Fiona… now that Hugh and I are divorced, I’m not sure what I should call you anymore.”
Bioha handed her a glass of juice. “Whatever you’re 18:13

Gwen took Bethan’s hand. “Bethy, my brother’s not broke. When you divorced him, why did you leave with nothing?”
Bethan patted Gwen’s hand, then pulled a bank card from her purse.
She pushed the bank card toward Fiona. “He gave me this, but there’s far too much money on it. I can’t accept it. Would you keep it safe for him?”
She’d looked into it-the card held a staggering five trillion.
She’d always wondered-if the Cavill family men were so selfish and cold-hearted, how did they manage to stay at the top of New York’s elite?
How could Hugh look down on the Byrons, the Keatings, and even Europe’s Locke family like they were nothing?
It wasn’t until she counted the zeros on that bank card that she finally understood just how terrifying the Cavill family’s power really was.
