Breaking Point of Divorce (Hugh and Bethan) novel Chapter 422

Chapter 422 Protect

The next morning, a sharp, insistent phone ring jolted Hugh out of sleep.

By nine o'clock, he'd made his way to the Cavill Manor.

There in the living room, his grandfather and parents sat, their faces heavy with concern.

The memory of Bethan's words from the previous night brought a faint easing to Hugh's tired features.

They were his family, after all.

He was angry, but the bond was unbreakable.

Slipping out of his suit jacket, Hugh took a seat opposite his parents.

Barely had he sat down when Ryan jumped in. "Your grandpa's signed over his shares. When are you getting back to the company?"

"Relax. Let the paperwork sort itself out first," Hugh replied.

Hugh was determined to live for his family, making sure they were provided for in their twilight years.

But he also had his own line.

He'd stay at the top of New York society, watching over Bethan, protecting her, and hoping she'd be happy—even if that meant she found happiness with someone else.

Fiona stood up and marched over to Hugh. "Thought you said you were done with Megan. So why'd she show up at your and Bethy's birthday bash?"

Hugh's face tightened. He got to his feet and explained, "Mom, I've got someone on it."

"Did you bring that Megan back to the States?" Harvey growled.

Hugh walked up to his grandfather.

"Grandpa, it wasn't me," he said, then faced his parents.

"Mom, Dad, don't worry. I'm done with her."

Ryan let out a scoff. "You'd better be."

Fiona was unconvinced. "She lands back in the country and shows up at the hotel where you two were celebrating. If you didn't tell her, how'd she find out?"

At her words, Hugh dropped his eyes, hiding the turmoil within.

He was dead-certain Bethan was behind Megan's appearance.

That day, Bethan had dragged him to the seafood market.

The moment he'd spotted Nola and Jasper, he'd known what she was up to.

He'd assumed that with his grandfather's men keeping an eye on Megan overseas, she wouldn't be able to sneak back.

But she'd managed to evade them.

Pointing at Hugh's back, Ryan roared, "I'm your father! Is that how you talk to me?"

Hugh strode away without a backward glance.

He opened the car door and looked up at the sky above the yard.

The sunlight dispelled the gloom in the yard.

From Harvey and Ryan's attitudes just now, Hugh realized something.

In fact, in his past life, the reason why Harvey and Ryan were so overbearing in interfering and controlling him was partly his own fault.

Megan had "saved" him, and he had a soft spot for her, thinking he knew that woman well.

The more Harvey and Ryan tried to control and interfere, the more he rebelled.

It was only when Hugh realized he'd lost Bethan completely that he awakened to his feelings for her.

And Harvey and Ryan only saw the light after they'd lost him.

It was pointless to understand something only after losing it.

In this life, he not only had to change himself but also his family.

Hugh was determined to ensure everyone around him was well.
