Breaking Point of Divorce (Hugh and Bethan) novel Chapter 424

Chapter 424 Make All My Sacrifices Worth It

Megan hung back about two steps from Hugh. She suddenly felt nervous and crumpled to the floor.

Pointing a finger skyward, she let out a desperate vow. "Hugh, I swear on my life. Your grandpa threatened my family and forced me to take that money. He's the one who made me go abroad and get hitched!"

Hugh nonchalantly lit a cigarette, then settled back into the sofa, getting comfy.

"Take your time, spill the beans," he said casually.

Megan's eyes were fixed on Hugh as she waited for a helping hand. But as minutes ticked by and Hugh just sat there, she pushed herself up.

Massaging her sore knee, she then crouched back down in front of him.

"Hugh, your grandpa said if I didn't split, you'd be left with nothing. He dangled my family and your future over my head. That's why I bailed. And that money? I never touched a dime. As soon as I landed in Canada, it got snatched. If you don't buy it, I'll swear on my kid's life!"

Hugh's silence was deafening. Megan stared at him, disbelief written all over her face. "Hugh, I'm putting my son on the line here. You still don't trust me?"

Hugh's gaze was full of loathing.

A mom swearing on her own kid? He'd fallen for this act before.

The silence stretched on, making Megan's heart pound.

In a fit of desperation, she shot up and shed her coat.

Rolling up her sleeves, she flashed the whip marks on her arms.

But Hugh didn't even bat an eye.

Frustration and guilt welled up in Megan.

Her eyes welled with tears, and she broke into sobs.

She pleaded, "Hugh, your grandpa was hell-bent on splitting us up. He shipped me off and made me marry some guy. These years abroad have been a nightmare. I've been beaten, abused, and forced to have a kid. If I had that money, do you think I'd be in this mess?"

Still no response from Hugh. Megan plowed on. "Even after all the beatings, I never thought of coming back to mess with your life. But I've got bad depression. I had no other option but to come home."

The tears flowed freely now. "If I croak, my kid's gonna be an orphan. I'm a mom, Hugh. I was out of options. That's why I'm here, asking for your help."

Hugh sat there, face impassive. He'd heard this sob story in a past life.

Hugh couldn't help but frown at this.

A shy flush crept across Megan's face.

"Hugh, ever since your grandpa strong-armed me into that overseas marriage, it's been one long nightmare. I haven't even had a proper birthday celebration in ages."

Taking a brief moment to collect herself, she continued, "Hugh, given all the pain I've endured and the happiness I've sacrificed for you, could you make up for it by throwing me a birthday bash?"

A cold smile flashed across Hugh's face. "Anything else on your wish list?"

"Really, Hugh? You'll make my wish come true?" Megan's voice was laced with excitement.

"Let's hear what it is," Hugh replied.

Megan's voice quivered with eagerness. "Hugh, from the day I saved you, chased you, and we got together—then I had to leave—you never took the lead."

Lost in a daydream, Megan said, "I know it's all in the past, but I just wanna be like other girls. I'd love a beach birthday—dreaming of you baking me a cake, giving me a bunch of roses, and posting on Instagram that we were really together. That would make all my sacrifices worth it."

At the mention of "cake," "roses," and "Instagram," Hugh jumped up from the sofa suddenly, startling Megan.
