Chapter 448 It Wasn't Real Love
In the restroom, the sound of running water filled the air as Bethan turned on the faucet.
Leaning both hands on the sink, she locked eyes with her reflection in the mirror.
The words exchanged between Tristen and Hugh might've been a mystery to others, but she grasped their implications clearly.
Those two guys were a constant headache.
Yet, this was a party arranged by Mason and Gwen for her. There was no way she could leave early.
Taking a series of deep breaths, she attempted to muster up some energy.
Just then, Gwen sidled up to Bethan and inquired tentatively, "Hey, Bethan, did Hugh do something to screw you over, which is why you called off the engagement?"
Bethan shut off the faucet and heaved a quiet sigh.
Back in the day, she'd been head-over-heels for Hugh. Her high-profile pursuit over the years had made the whole social scene aware of her infatuation.
No wonder no one believed she genuinely wanted to part ways with him.
Yvonne, looking concerned, stepped forward and asked, "Are you okay, Bethan?"
Bethan shook her head and told Gwen, "Gwen, after the Olsen family went belly-up, I clung to your brother and thought I loved him. I was just grabbing at straws. It wasn't real love. Your brother's always treated me like a little sister, helping and looking out for me. We've decided to be friends for life."
Gwen nodded, still a bit doubtful. Bethan let out a weary sigh.
After a short chat, the three girls made their way back to the private room.
In the hallway outside, from a distance of about 10 feet, Bethan caught sight of Hugh and Tristen. Her heart skipped a beat.
What on earth are they doing together?
"Dr. Olsen,"
"Bethy."
Both men called out at the same time and started striding toward her.
Bethan halted and managed a smile.
Tristen glanced at Hugh and said, "Mr. Cavill, you go first."
But Hugh waved him off. "No, you speak."
Tristen insisted, "Come on, Mr. Cavill, you take the floor."
Hugh replied, "Mr. Dixon, no need to be so formal."
Their polite back-and-forth left the three girls completely bewildered.
Fed up, Bethan blurted out, "How about I say something first?"
Hugh and Tristen exchanged a look and nodded in sync.
Bethan told them, "Guys, could you move aside? You're blocking the way."
The two men looked at each other again and simultaneously stepped to the side.
Bethan linked arms with Yvonne and Gwen and entered the room.
Hugh followed suit.
Tristen tried to convince her, "That single drink wore off ages ago. You won't even register on a breathalyzer. I've got some work stuff to discuss with you. We can chat on the way."
Hearing it was work-related, Bethan wavered for a moment and then gave in.
From what she knew of Tristen, he never trifled with work matters.
She turned to the group with a smile. "Thanks for tonight, guys. I'm off now," she said sweetly.
Tristen, being the gentleman, opened the passenger-side door for Bethan, and she slid into the car.
Hugh stood there, rooted to the spot, his fists clenched at his sides as he watched them leave.
As soon as Tristen got in the driver's seat and started the engine, Bethan blurted out, "Tristen, Hugh's just like a brother to me. You don't have to be so obvious about picking fights with him over me!"
Tristen leaned over to buckle Bethan's seatbelt, but she leaned back, avoiding his touch.
Looking into her eyes up close, Tristen let out a soft laugh. "Dr. Olsen, are you explaining things to me?" he teased.
Their eyes locked, and Bethan suddenly pushed him away.
She'd always seen Tristen as a proper gentleman, reserved and polite. But the more she interacted with him, the more she discovered a hidden edge in him.
Those eyes of his, when he smiled at her, seemed to draw her in.
Pushed back, Tristen laughed. "You weren't this bashful when we were too close," he quipped.
Bethan covered her ears, pretending not to hear.
Tristen, a well-known medical prodigy, was spouting such cheeky lines. It was so unlike his refined image!
