THAT SAME DAY:
“Take a seat here.” Mrs Jones pointed to the front seat which had already been reserved.
“They already assigned us a seat, mum. Quite frankly with you, I’m in no mood for embarrassments today.” Janet responded with high irritation laced in her voice.
Just as Mrs Jones was about to speak in protest, Janet looked around and she was filled with excitement when she said, “Look at Elijah’s mum!”
“Yes…in the front seat.” Janet rolled her eyes at her mum’s remark and hurriedly rushed towards Mrs Martinez who was seated elegantly, conversing with one of the most famous retired fashion icons in the world, D’ Mangelo, and to her left was Cece Ferris renowned fashion critic who was the star of the Early Morning Fashion show.
“Mrs Martinez, Hi.” Janet greeted with a huge smile on her face.
Mrs Martinez looked at her from head to toe through the large dark glasses on her eyes, and was filled with instant disappointment.
“Would you excuse me for a second?” She rose to her feet smiling tightly at the two next to her who were giving the same look to Janet.
They both headed to the bathroom, while Mrs Jones went ahead to grab a drink and headed to her seat as soon as she noticed her friend talking amongst other people.
“Aren’t you a model?” Mrs Martinez inquired in a hushed tone, making Janet frown in confusion.
“I am but I decided to take a break this month. So many designers begged for me to be their model knowing it would also draw the press’ attention but I declined. I’m simply committed to my future husband.” She responded smiling brightly like a child knowing she was telling nothing but a lie.
Word had gone out that she was the type of model to drop out either a day before the event on the day. She had done that about five times, and the designers weren’t pleased so it was hard for her to get gigs. Neither did she care much, after all she was dating Elijah Martinez.
What else could she possibly dream of except a marriage to him?
“Where did you get that dress from?” Mrs Martinez asked ignoring all of her other comments.
“You know what….it doesn’t matter. But you should know that the designer is a rapist and a pedophile and everyone is boycotting his dresses and designs. Aside from that, isn’t it glaring that the dress is tacky? You look
.” She trailed after cutting off Janet whose mouth was now left slightly ajared.
She was dressed in a butt short brown armless gown which hugged her body in a way that seemed she couldn’t breathe.
“You don’t have to say anything. I will be in my seat as the show is about to start. You and Your mother should have a good night, I will see you soon.” Mrs Martinez smiled tightly after drying her hands and exited out the

Janet knew that it was a code telling her not to come near her for the rest of the evening.
Just as Janet opened the door of the bathroom, she watched as a little girl ran past her about to hit her, “Watch where you’re going dumb child.” She scolded glaring at the girl while trying to blink away the tears threatening to fall.
“Amelia! Quit running.” Janet walked past the lady who had cautioned Amelia, who stood there dumbfounded.
“Are you okay, Sweetie?” Maya questioned and Amelia nodded, stepping into the bathroom.
Was that who I think it was? Maya felt shivers and she instantly texted Hannah and Lucas informing them that she might have just seen Janet.
Maya’s phone dinged and she nodded at the message telling her not to let the kids out of her sight.
Soon the event started and the auditorium darkened. Conversations hushed into scattered murmurs as the music shifted from soft pre-show melodies to a rising orchestral overture. Spotlights swept across the long silver runway that gleamed beneath them like polished glass.
Mrs. Jones smoothed her skirt nervously, casting glances at her daughter who was fussing with her lipstick in the reflection of her phone.
“Can you stop?” She snapped at Janet who seemed restless, eager, desperate almost, her eyes darting toward the photographers lined at the edges of the stage. She wanted to be noticed but at the same time she felt so insecure, as the words of Mrs Martinez played in her mind repeatedly.
She had called Elijah a couple of times to rant to him but there was no response neither did his assistant pick up either. She was so livid, she almost smashed her phone.
“What kind of mother are you if you can’t tell your daughter her choice of clothing will cause her embarrassment? I have never for once seen my mother-in-law disgusted by me?” Janet snapped back in a hushed voice frowning deeply.
Mrs Jones rolled her eyes, “Quit frowning, you’re going to get wrinkles.” She shifted in her seat, watching the rows fill with critics, investors, celebrities, designers. And among them, far at the edge of the backstage curtain, she thought she caught sight of a profile she had not seen in years.
Why did that person look so familiar? She stretched her neck but the person was no longer in sight.
The music swelled. The first designer, Sienna Vale, and her models hit the runaway and everyone applauded after the beautiful designer came out after.
Soon it was the time Lucas and most of the audience had been waiting for. A model stepped onto the runway, wearing the first design: a sweeping emerald gown with architectural pleats that caught every flicker of light. The crowd gasped in unison. Cameras clicked like a thousand tiny heartbeats.
“That is Mummy’s design!” Amelia exclaimed, recalling her mother’s sketchbook and her twin nodded in agreement.

Janet straightened immediately. Her jaw dropped. “Oh my God,” she whispered to herself. “Who designed this?”
Mrs Martinez pressed a hand to her chest, eyes wide. “It’s…magnificent.”
