Bride behind the mask novel (Marguerite) novel Chapter 769

An hour into their high-speed train ride to Cresthaven, Manley had dozed off, his head resting on Hayes's shoulder, a lollipop still in his mouth.

Hayes, on the other hand, was restless, swiping through the screen of his children's smartwatch, where he had transferred all his chat records with a mysterious online friend.

The sudden alert that had appeared and then vanished from his screen was on his mind, as was the message he had sent that hadn't received a reply yet. Curiosity got the better of him, and he turned to Marguerite with a question.

"Mom, have you ever heard of a chip?" he asked.

"A chip?" Marguerite tensed up at the question.

Hayes nodded. "Yeah, like, if you put a chip into someone's brain, they lose all their memories."

His explanation was a bit off the mark, but Marguerite understood all too well.

What he was describing was the chip technology that Frederick and Maurice had been scrambling over just six months ago!

But how could Hayes possibly know about this technology?

After Frederick's death, the project, including the collaboration with the hacker, had been taken over by Maurice.

And when the chip technology was eventually released, it was marketed as an enhanced version of ECT (Electroconvulsive Therapy), with no mention of implanting chips into people's bodies.

Furthermore, Hayes was just a kindergartner; there was no way he should know anything about it.

Trying to hide her surprise, Marguerite asked, "Why do you ask about this, Hayes? Where did you hear about chip technology?"

Where else could he have heard it if not from that mysterious online friend who might be Teresa?

But Hayes wasn't sure if they were the same person and decided to fib.

"No one told me... I saw it in a sci-fi movie."

Marguerite let out a sigh of relief, pinched his cheek, and didn't pursue the truth.

"Hayes, movies are just movies, and reality is reality. There's no such technology in the real world."

Hayes looked at his mom, half-convinced. Marguerite offered him a weak smile in return, her mind elsewhere.

Enough was enough!

He couldn't keep waiting for the mysterious online friend to contact him. It was time to take matters into his own hands.

Without worrying whether his message would get a reply, he sent one anyway:

"Nobody knows about the chip technology you mentioned. Can you draw it for me?"

Asking for a drawing was just a pretext; his main goal was to identify the person through their art style.

Having seen Teresa's distinctive artwork, Hayes believed he could recognize her style.

Meanwhile, Marguerite, after visiting the cemetery, was not in the best of spirits. She even developed a fever upon returning home and spent several days in bed recovering.

Just when things seemed to be getting back to normal, and Marguerite was about to head to the office, Hayes and Manley's kindergarten teacher called her urgently.

"Mrs. Hayes, you need to come to the kindergarten right away. Your son got into a fight with a little girl!"
