Neeko puffed out her chest proudly. “Neeko turned into a big bear and went heave–ho to push the cart back! Now I don’t have to use that stupid basket to carry coal!”

Riley looked at the girl, but her mind was filled with the image of a giant brown bear sprinting through the snow while pushing a mine cart.

“You’re amazing, Neeko!”

Riley didn’t hold back her praise. She knelt down to eye–level with the girl and said sincerely, “It looks like you really are the hardest worker in this family. You did a great job watching the house all by yourself.”

Hearing the words “hardest worker,” Neeko’s eyes lit up like high–beams, and her tail wagged so fast it became a blur.

“Hehe… if Riley is happy, Neeko is happy!”

Neeko giggled, then suddenly slapped her forehead as if remembering something. “Oh! One more surprise! A super big one!”

“Another one?” Riley was genuinely shocked.

The yard full of resources was already a massive win; what could top that?

“Riley, come quick! Come on!”

Neeko pulled Riley toward the cabin with an air of mystery.

As she walked, Riley thought back on their conversation.

She realized that Neeko’s logic and vocabulary had taken a massive leap forward.

Before, Neeko struggled with sentences, often repeating words or only expressing simple needs. Now, she was fluent enough to argue and even used onomatopoeia like “heave–ho.”

It seemed that tablet was doing wonders for her education.

Riley pushed open the inner door.

The warmth from the fireplace hit her immediately.

The familiarsofa, the hearth, and the tablet on the coffee table showing a cartoon… it was incredibly cozy.

But Riley’s attention was instantly snatched by an “unidentified organism” on the sofa.

Sitting right on Riley’s favorite beige beanbag chair was a creature she had never seen before.

It was a little guy, only about the size of a small dog.

It was covered in soft, ash–grey downy feathers and looked like a ball of yarn.

Its body was shaped like a lion cub, with a messy, tufted mane. But instead of a feline mouth, it had a hard, amber–colored eagle’s beak.

Most strikingly, a pair of undeveloped wings were tucked against its back, occasionally fluttering in a way that was both clumsy and adorable.

She whispered the name instinctively.

The little creature, which had been staring intently at the tablet screen with its head tilted, suddenly snapped its head around.

It blinked its golden pupils at Riley with an expression of pure, innocent stupidity–much like Neeko’s.

“Chirp?”

The little gryphon let out a sound that was half–bird, half–kitten. It tried to stand up and flutter its wings, but its hind legs were too short; it ended up rolling across the soft sofa and landing belly–up.

“Pfft…”

Riley couldn’t help but laugh out loud.

This was the legendary king of the skies? It looked like a feathered golden retriever.

Neeko ran over happily, scooped up the clumsy cub, and held it up like a trophy for Riley to see.

“Look, Riley! It was so cold that night, Neeko was scared it would freeze, so I slept holding the egg. Then ‘crack!‘ it popped out in the middle of the night!”

Neeko rubbed her cheek against the cub’s fuzzy head. “He’s so smart! I call him Ash. He knows to follow Neeko wherever I go!”

Looking at the two adorable creatures, Riley’s heart completely melted.
