The three girls headed back into the living room. The fire in the fireplace had died down, leaving only glowing red embers pumping

out faint warmth.

The teleportation array made travel quick and easy, but on brutal snowy nights like this, they still preferred huddling together to

chat.

They talked for hours. Before any of them realized it, the clock was nearly midnight

“Yawn-

TartKing’s eyes watered from exhaustion. “I can’t keep my eyes open anymore. I’m heading to bed.”

“I’m leaving too.”

PineappleBeer stood up and fixed her gear. “Don’t stay up late, Riley.”

“Got it. Night!”

Riley smiled and walked them over to the teleportation array.

Hum-

A flash of blue light swept across the floor.

The two girls vanished without a trace.

The once lively living room turned dead quiet in an instant.

“Huff…”

Riley stood alone in the empty room and watched the last spark in the fireplace flicker out.

The extreme liveliness from earlier melted into thick, heavy silence.

Other than the endless howl of the blizzard outside, the faint crackle of dying embers was the only sound inside the house.

Neeko had already headed back to her room to sleep.

“Time for bed.”

Riley shook her head to shake off the strange loneliness creeping into her chest.

She turned off the main living room lights, leaving only one dim wall lamp glowing softly. Then she walked toward her master bedroom.

Her slippers tapped lightly against the solid wood floor.

The sound normally went unnoticed, but in the dead quiet of midnight, every step echoed sharply.

Tap. Tap. Tap.

Riley pushed open her bedroom door.

The room was dark. Pale white light seeped through the curtain gaps, casting faint dum illumination across the space.

She did not bother turning on the lights.

After living here for so long, she could navigate the room perfectly fine in the dark.

She knew every detail-the familiar large bed, the soft blankets, and the cup sitting on her nightstand.

Everything looked completely normal.

Riley walked over to the bed, slipped off her slippers, and crawled under the covers.

She fell asleep almost instantly.

“Click.”

A tiny, subtle sound cut through the heavy silence.

Riley’s eyes snapped open, but she stayed perfectly still.

Someone is here?

That is impossible.

Auto-firing arrow towers guarded the camp’s outer perimeter, paired with a hawk-eye warning system.

Besides, PineappleBeer and TartKing had already gone home to sleep. There was no way they’d come back in the middle of the night.

The blizzard was so harsh that even the Ghouls refused to wander outside.

What can possibly be creeping around?

Is it Neeko?

Riley held her breath and listened closely.

Yet the room remained unnervingly quiet.

Only the endless wail of the snowstorm echoed outside.

Whoosh-Whoosh-

Slowly, Riley pulled her axe out of her inventory. She sat up straight in one sharp motion, her sharp eyes scanning every corner of the bedroom.

Nothing.

The empty room held nothing but dark furniture silhouettes.

“Am I just being paranoid?”

Riley frowned.

Maybe the illusion earlie had fried her nerves.

Still, she could not relax enough to fall back asleep.

She climbed out of bed barefoot, stepping silently across the carpet. She circled the entire room without making a sound.

Empty closet.

Clear space under the bed.

Vacant bathroom.

She even marched to the window and yanked the curtains wide open.

t

Swish-

The blizzard still raged violently outside. Everything was pure white, visibility nearly zero.

Riley did another quiet sweep of the house. She peeked into Neeko’s room, finding the girl fast asleep white hugging a pillow.

The doors leading to the treant and Ash’s rooms were tightly shut. It was not any of them.

Confused and uneasy, she grabbed her tablet and pulled up the surveillance feed.
