Joseph and his nephews had watched their town disappear. They had wandered for a very long time and almost given up on living.

Jack’s situation was different. His group had only gotten lost in the snow. He still held onto foolish hope, thinking he had simply taken a wrong turn. On top of that, he had a wife and kids waiting for him back home. That kind of hope was the hardest thing to let go of

“It’s fine. I understand you.” Riley’s tone turned softer.

“I won’t stop you if you want to go. Just stay safe out there.”

“Really?” Jack lifted his head, his eyes full of surprise.

“Really.”

Riley changed her tone.

“But you saw the monsters that come out at night. Traveling far across the snowy plains after dark is way too dangerous.

“I’ll give you three days. If you find your way back, I’m happy for you to return to your family. If you fail, this camp will always have a place for you.

“But you have to live on your own, just like Joseph. I’ll give you the tools, and you earn your keep.”

Jack felt deep gratitude toward Riley. He had never met such a humble

mage before.

“Of course. Thank you so much. If I successfully deliver the cargo, I will definitely come back and repay your kindness.”

“Don’t worry about it.” Riley waved her hand.

“What’s your plan now?”

Jack answered quickly, “Tom and I will travel light. We’ll take two horses and search the nearby area for familiar landmarks or towns.

“Can you please let Anna and Lily stay here for a few more days? Could you also watch over our cargo?

“If we find the road, we’ll come back for them right away. If we don’t return in three days…”

“Then the cargo and Lily will be fully in your care. They are skilled winemakers. With enough ingredients, they will surely repay you.”

Riley could tell what Jack truly meant. He simply could not accept that everything he knew was gone. He needed to see the truth with his own eyes to let go.

Riley stared at him quietly and nodded.

“Go get ready if you’re set on leaving. Tom is going with you, correct? Alright.

“Finish your breakfast and pack your things. I’ll send you back to TartKing’s camp where your wagons are.”

Ten minutes later, Riley teleported Jack and Tom back to TartKing’s camp.

The two wagons loaded with wine barrels sat quietly beside the teleportation array.

“You’re up pretty early, Burger. What’s going on?” TartKing was eating breakfast and walked over after hearing the noise.

“They want to look around and try to find their way home,” Riley explained.

Jack and Tom quickly greeted and bowed to TartKing.

The two men skillfully unhitched the horses from the wagons and fed them flat bread.

“So that’s what these horses eat. I tried feeding them other food last night, and they refused it completely,” TartKing said.

“They’re just picky.” Riley pulled a bunch of items out of her bag and tossed them to the two

men.

“Take these.”

Jack scrambled to catch the items. He held some hard compressed food bars and two unlit torches.

“These are compressed biscuits and chocolate.”

Riley pointed at the hard brick-shaped bars.

“Don’t complain about the texture. A small piece keeps you full for a long time. It has high calories and restores your energy fast. Don’t save them. Eat whenever you’re hungry.

“And these.”

She pointed at the two torches.
