“But just a heads up–they’ve got a bit of a temper. Might end up biting their owner in the ass.
“Starting bid: 50 tokens!”
“A magical plant?”
Everyone’s eyes lit up instantly. Something that could actually guard your home?
“Boss… I really want this one,” TartKing whispered, tugging lightly at Riley’s sleeve.
Her own camp was only surrounded by a rickety wooden fence. The ghouls that roamed outside after dark were terrifying. She wasn’t strong enough to hold them off alone. What she really needed was something–anything–that could help protect the place.
Riley glanced at her and gave a small smile.
“Go for it then. If you want it, place a bid. I won’t get in your way.”
“Fifty–one tokens,” TartKing called out, speaking up
first.
But it was clear the magical plant had caught the attention of the buzz–cut guy and his crew too. A living guard plant wasn’t just a curiosity–it was a strategic asset in a world like this.
“Sixty!” After a quick huddle with his men, the buzz–cut guy shouted a new price.
“Damn. Sixty already?” TartKing’s expression dimmed. Her entire savings only came to fifty- five tokens.
“Want me to spot you the difference? You can counter,” Riley offered quietly.
TartKing hesitated, then shook her head. “No, it’s okay. I’ll just watch. Thanks anyway, boss.”
She still didn’t know exactly what the plant could do, and she didn’t feel right about owing Riley a favor over something so uncertain.
“Sixty–five. I’ll take it.”
A cool, sharp voice cut through the chatter from the entrance of the stone hall.
All heads turned.
It was PineappleBeer–the one who’d parted ways with Riley earlier. She was limping inside,

leaning heavily against the doorframe.
Half her body was drenched in dark, drying blood. She looked badly hurt.

But in one hand, she held a rough cloth sack, still dripping red. Without ceremony, she tossed it toward the goblin merchant.
“The materials in there are worth a hundred tokens. I’ll add another hundred on top. I’m taking whatever you have left.”
The goblin merchant caught the bag, peeked inside, and his beady eyes went wide.
“Well, I’ll be! Two boss cores?! That’s more than enough! But… you haven’t even heard what the last two rewards are yet.”
“Don’t need to. I’m asking if you’ll sell or not.” PineappleBeer’s tone was flat, leaving no room for debate.
“Deal! All three remaining items are yours!” The goblin’s face broke into an ingratiating grin. Clearly, Pineapple Beer’s offer had made him lose all interest in prolonging the auction.
The room erupted.
“Hey, that’s way over the line!” one of the guys from Nightfall–a man with a nasty scar across his cheek–shouted, stepping forward. “You’re buying blind? This is an auction!”
“Seriously! I’ve got tokens too. Why do you get to shut everyone out?” someone else muttered in agreement.
Cutting off everyone’s chance like that was a surefire way to make the whole room resent you.
But Pineapple Beer paid no mind to the protests. She just stood there, silent and steady, her gaze sweeping over the crowd.
The goblin merchant flashed a gold–toothed smile, looking smug.
“Oh my, oh my. Now this is a customer who knows how to spend! I do love a bold spender!”
He didn’t give anyone else a chance to object. With a wave of his cane, he announced, “The remaining lots go to the young lady! Always a pleasure doing business.”
As soon as the words left his mouth, the four shielded displays clicked open, and the items within vanished–transferred directly into Pineapple Beer’s inventory.
He hadn’t even let anyone else get a proper look.

That was just blatant favoritism.

Pineapple Beer took the seed pouch into her hand. But instead of keeping it, she turned and tossed it toward TartKing, who was standing a short distance away.
“Here.”
Her voice was weak but left no room for refusal. “For the favor I owed you.”
The hall went wild again.
Was she serious? A one–of–a–kind magical seed, just given away like a spare pack of gum?
TartKing fumbled but caught the seed pouch, her eyes instantly welling up. “Pineapple Beer! You’re–you’re hurt! Oh god…”
The buzz–cut guy’s face had turned thunderous. He stared hard at PineappleBeer, greed and anger churning in his eyes.
