“Quit spreading rumors.”

“I’m not spreading anything. I saw it with my own eyes.”

“Even if you saw it, keep it to yourself.”

The quiet murmurs died fast, swallowed up by the constant clank of crossbow mechanisms.

Joseph, Anna, Lily, Jack-all the earliest members-knew the truth about Neeko. TartKing knew too.

Most of the newcomers only watched two versions of Riley show up one after the other, then saw Neeko step out from where one of them had stood.

They guessed.

Clone technique, illusion magic, special item, hidden skill…

Let them guess whatever they wanted.

No one was going to tell them Neeko had shapeshifted into Riley all this time just to keep everyone calm.

The old-timers wouldn’t talk. Joseph wouldn’t talk. Anna and Lily wouldn’t either.

Some truths were better left unspoken.

The defenses had just stabilized. Morale was more valuable than food or arrows right now.

Riley reached out and dragged the innermost defensive line on the map a finger’s width outward.

“The new walls are holding strong.”

Joseph looked up at her.

Riley tapped the west and south sections of the map.

“Keep the tool shed pumping out arrows. Separate regular bolts from oil fire bolts. The mess tent sends out hot food every three hours. No one on wall duty fights on an empty stomach.”

Outside, monsters slammed into the new stone walls with dull, heavy thuds. The barriers

shook slightly. Wall spikes snagged a climbing monster mid-charge. Auto turrets locked on and fired three quick shots, pinning the creature back down into the snow.

Guards on the wall immediately resupplied and readied new bolts.

Chaos still raged outside, but order finally took hold inside the camp.

Riley circled the command tent twice. She checked the west and south defensive lines in

person.

She confirmed the stone walls were stable, the turret coverage had no blind spots, wounded survivors were receiving treatment in shifts, and all the food pulled from the main house storage had been logged and sorted by Anna.

Only then did she walk back to the front of the tool shed.

Wind and snow whipped against her face nonstop.

She stood by the wooden shelter and stared out at the outer zone fully overrun by monsters.

That land had once been inside her camp’s safe zone.

Farmland, workshops, activity halls, outer walls, lampposts, patrol posts-she had built every last bit of it step by step.

Now most of it lay buried under snow and monster corpses, grayed out completely on her system interface.

Riley pulled her gaze back.

There was no rushing this.

Neeko sat on a small stool nearby, still holding her half-finished bowl of stew. She nodded off repeatedly, fighting to stay awake.

C.P. shifted its paws closer and let her lean against its legs.

Joseph had already marked the new stone-wall layout, turret positions, and watchtower positions on the map in charcoal. The outer lines crossed out by red strips still looked harsh, but the innermost defense line was no longer shrinking inward.

Riley brushed a small black stone off the edge of the map.

“We hold here first. This side takes the brunt of the monster assault.

“Six men on the west wall, four on the south. Two each for east and north. Pair them with the auto turrets, and we’ve got enough defense to hold steady for a while.”

Riley glanced over the setup and spoke again.

“Cut two more people from duty.”

Joseph frowned on instinct.

Riley tilted her chin toward the outer walls.

“These aren’t flimsy wooden barriers anymore. Monsters can’t chew through stone. If a big beast charges, the turrets will engage first.

“Let most people sleep tonight. They need real rest.”

Joseph flipped his wooden duty tags and crossed out two more names.

He’d been forcing everyone to fight nonstop for days. With Riley back, he’d forgotten rest was even an option.

Anna walked over with the updated food schedule.

“I’ll pass the word,” she said immediately. “Night watch shifts are four hours max. Anyone rotated off duty goes straight to sleep. No sneaking over to the arrow shed to work extra.”

She turned to leave for the mess tent, then glanced back.

“We still have plenty of meat broth. Can we serve an extra round tonight for the kids and wounded?”

“Is it logged in the warehouse records?” Riley asked.

“It’s all accounted for.” Anna held up her wooden tag. “Lily’s watching the stock. She notices if anyone takes even an extra scrap of meat.”

Riley nodded.
