Tartking thought for a second and spoke up. “Help me triage the wounded. You know their conditions better than anyone.”
Lily nodded. “Got it.”
Outside the medical hut, the mess tent had a thick stew simmering in large pots.
Frozen meat chunks tumbled into the broth along with potatoes. Flour was stirred into a thick paste. The cook stirred the pot, and warm food scent drifted on the wind. Many people turned their heads instinctively.
Every wall defender got half a bowl of the hearty stew.
No one complained about the portion size.
A young girl covered in ash carried a bowl up to her mother on the wall. The woman took one sip, her eyes turning red, then held the bowl out for her daughter to drink.
The girl shook her head. She turned and ran toward the arrow shed to haul supplies. Anna caught her halfway, stopped her, and pressed a compressed biscuit into her hand.
The girl lowered her head and bit into the biscuit. Tears dropped onto her knuckles, and she wiped them off quickly with her sleeve.
Riley walked a full circuit around the new defense line.
The west side took the heaviest enemy pressure. The new stone wall and relocated auto turrets had drastically cut down the risk
there.
The wooden wall on the south side was badly damaged. Joseph had already stacked old shelves and stones between the outer wood barrier and inner stone wall to build a buffer layer.
The newly built turrets on the east side faced no large monster assaults for the moment. Still, small monsters roamed constantly beyond the snowy gully and needed consistent clearing.
On the north side, near the rear of the main house, Riley finally spotted Twiggy.
It stood among a row of living wooden stakes. Its roots sank into the snow, and it wove thin vines steadily into every crack of the wooden wall.
A group of kids surrounded it, holding wooden nails and thin rope.
“Twiggy, this spot’s loose!”
The treant turned slowly. A vine stretched out, coiled around the loose plank, and pulled it firmly back into place.
The kids immediately secured the board down with wooden nails.
The treant froze mid-movement when it saw Riley.
It pulled its roots free from the snow and stumbled two small steps toward her.
The few remaining withered leaves on its canopy shook once, a quiet greeting, before it turned back to its work.

Miey stepped forward and bent down to touch its trunk.
The treant’s branches trembled
A single yellowed leaf fell and landed on the back of Riley’s hand.
Riley caught the leaf and looked up at the crude secondary barrier of living stakes.

The defenses were rough and unpolished, but they would serve as the final buffer to protest the main house and medical hut if the front stone wall ever fell.
The treant had pushed itself to its absolute limit building this entire fallback line in just a few days.
“Let it rest and recover. The stone wall can hold the monsters off for several days now,” Riley said.
One of the nearby kids nodded at once. “We’ll watch over Twiggy!”
The treant extended a thin branch and patted the child lightly on the head.
The kid stood up straight, like they’d been handed an important duty.
After checking the north side, Riley headed back to the front defenses.
Shadows kept charging through the blizzard, slamming against the walls one after another. But with the new stone wall in place, the defenders no longer had to hold their ground on crumbling rotting planks.
Auto turrets absorbed most of the enemy pressure. Watchtowers provided clear vision of incoming threats. Fresh bolts streamed nonstop from the tool shed. Hot meals were delivered to every post across the camp.
They were far from safe.
But the camp was no longer moments from total collapse.
When Riley returned to the command tent, Joseph was reorganizing the guard shifts.
He split all able-bodied defenders into four teams. He crossed every wounded survivor off the frontline roster. They would no longer take long shifts on the main wall. Instead, they handled the arrow shed, mess tent, base logistics, and light crossbow posts on the inner line.
Jack sat nearby with his arm in a sling. He marked every small gap where minor monsters could slip through and directed the young guards to install extra wooden spikes.
Anna adjusted warehouse access permissions while holding her wooden resource tags.
TartKing made Neeko finish a bowl of stew and handed her a biscuit afterward. Neeko ate slowly, her eyes never leaving Riley’s figure.
C.P. lay sprawled by the door, its head resting on its front paws. Its flames fully dimmed, and exhaustion finally showed on its face.
