Chapter 214 Hidden Edges
Yolanda always had a clear sense of right and wrong. She knew that big opportunities should only go to people who could handle them. And honestly, she still couldn’t tell what kind of person Denton would become.
“That kid doesn’t look very ambitious,” she said, thinking her judgment was pretty sharp.
Adriana frowned; the more she thought, the angrier she became. “Maybe not now. But who knows about later? Today he agreed to Harold’s plan to study abroad. Tomorrow he might agree to fight Curtis for the inheritance.”
Yolanda sighed. “True. You can’t put your guard down. That’s how rich family drama always goes. Messy and full of surprises.”
She was glad she was an only child. All the family resources were hers. No battles. No rivals.
Just then, Justin’s car pulled up beside them. “Ms. Xander,” he called “Get in.”
Adriana and Yolanda got into the car. Adriana sent Curtis a quick message, saying Justin had invited her to dinner.
Curtis didn’t reply; she thought it was fine.
That’s why, when Curtis suddenly walked into the restaurant halfway through dinner, with a cold and stormy face, Adriana was dumbfounded.
Justin leaned back in his seat, his voice smooth but sharp. “Mr. Lincoln, just walking in uninvited is not very polite, is it?”
Curtis let out a sarcastic laugh. “Inviting my wife behind my back–that’s not very decent either.”
Yolanda paused mid–bite and looked up at them, then she glanced at Adriana. “Hmm, this doesn’t look good. I kind of feel like they might start fighting.”
Adriana panicked a little. She tugged on Curtis’s sleeve. “Justin just wanted to apologize. That day, he was only delivering a message for Jeremy.”
Curtis didn’t even look at her. He stared straight at Justin. “Stay away from her. Don’t ever meet her alone.”
Justin lifted an eyebrow, refusing to back down. “Ms. Xander, maybe you don’t know. When Curtis was eighteen, he liked a girl who was still a minor. He chased lier, messed with her feelings, then dumped her and took off to another country for years.”
Justin had just spoken the truth, leaving Curtis no room to deny it, but not enough to explain himself either
Curtis curled his fists in anger. He knew it now; before good friends become enemies, they first have to destroy each other’s leverage. This was the problem between old friends, you knew too much of each other’s dark history.
Adriana was stunned and looked at Curtis.
Curtis didn’t look happy. He took a deep breath, held Adriana’s hand, and led her outside, “Let’s go. We’re going home.”
Adriana’s mind felt cloudy. She had heard that Curtis once liked Cynthia. Now, it was suddenly about some underage girl?
Just how many people had he liked?
“About that girl?” She wanted to ask about that girl.
She wanted him to explain.
But Curtis didn’t explain.
So Adriana didn’t ask.
