Curtis’s protection was about letting Adriana grow under his wing. He was willing to give Adriana freedom and a wide sky, willing to stay by her side as she grew up and made herself

Matthew’s protection was wanting her to always depend on him.

Matthew was always afraid that a fully capable Adriana would fly away.
