“Gary took me to the hospital today. The doctor said the babies are both fine. It’s just that one of them is developing a little slower because the older twin is absorbing more of the nutrients,” Adriana quietly reported the results of her check–up.
“Once they’re born, I’m spanking the older one’s butt to stick up for the younger one,” Curtis said, ruffling her hair with indulgent affection.
Adriana wrapped her arms around him. “Gary’s been taking really good care of me lately. Should we invite him over for dinner sometime?”
She tested the waters carefully.
Adriana didn’t really know what had happened between Curtis and Gary, but even she could tell the relationship between nephew and uncle was strained and complicated.
Several times, Gary had come to pick her up so they could go out, and Curtis hadn’t even shown his face.
At first, Adriana thought Curtis just didn’t trust Gary and refuse to let anyone know he was still alive. But
one time, she’d forgotten her check–up report at the hospital, and Curtis had brought it out to her himself -only to stand there in front of Gary without giving him so much as a glance.
Gary was the same; he didn’t look at Curtis at all. The two of them were more distant than strangers.
The moment Adriana mentioned inviting Gary over, Curtis was so startled that the bread slipped from his hands and thumped onto the cutting board. “Have dinner, my ass! Don’t invite him.”
Adriana studied him. “Honey … did something happen between you and Gary?”
“No.” Curtis dodged her gaze and immediately turned to bolt.
“Hey, look who’s here!” At the door, Yolanda came in excitedly with Denton in tow.
Denton had arrived as well, here to finish his degree.
Adriana tensed up and instinctively looked at Curtis, worried he wouldn’t trust Denton and wouldn’t want him to know he was alive.
But Curtis didn’t deliberately hide. Instead, he smiled at Denton. “Hungry? Go wash your hands and cat
with us.”
Denton sniffled; it was obvious he was moved to see Curtis, but it was just as obvious he’d already known Curtis was alive. “Curtis…”
Adriana shot Curtis a suspicious look. “So, Denton already knew you were alive?”
So, she was the only one who’d had to guess everything on her own?
“I left him a coded message,” Curtis muttered in explanation.

He’d left one for Adriana, too–sending Kenneth over with a bouquet of white lilies.
Adriana huffed and decided she didn’t want to talk to him anymore. He always chose secrecy.
They’d known each other since they were kids, and Curtis still had no intention of telling her the truth.
When she stomped off to the bedroom, cheeks puffed with anger, Curtis hurried after her.
“Did Adriana and Curtis fight?” Denton asked blankly.
“Maybe her emotions are just unstable from the pregnancy,” Yolanda replied, eyes fixed on the bread. She snuck a slice of cranberry bread and tossed one to Denton as well.
In the bedroom.
Adriana sat on the bed while Curtis walked over and crouched down, coaxing her gently. “Are you mad at me? I really wasn’t hiding it from you on purpose.”
“We obviously met when we were kids.” Adriana looked at him. “When I almost lost my sight in that fire, we’d already met, hadn’t we? That dessert–ball vendor in Harborton was your butler back at your old home in Govendale, wasn’t he? And that big golden retriever…”
Before she left, Adriana had made a point of going back to that snack street in Harborton.
She’d seen the uncle at the little cafe, and she’d seen the big golden retriever and the little one in his shop.
Curtis froze for a second. It was obvious he’d realized Adriana had opened his safe.
“Adriana … I didn’t mean to keep it from you. Back then, I left you and ran off to Moweland, and you suffered so much because of it. I figured you must hate me. I was afraid to tell you,” Curtis said quietly.
Adriana lowered her head, her eyes turning bright red.
“If you never tell me and never ask me, how would you know what I really think?” She muttered under her breath.
“When I found you again, all you had in your heart and eyes was Matthew,” Curtis said, so jealous his voice practically tasted sour.
Adriana froze for a moment and guiltily kept her mouth shut.
Thinking back to the first time she and Curtis had reunited, it was true–at that point in her life, all she’d seen was Matthew.
When she said nothing, Curtis only grew more jealous.
At this point, the tables had turned. He suddenly stood up and trapped her in his arms. “So, whose fault was it–yours or mine? Even if I’d told you I was the king of the world back then, you wouldn’t have left
with me.”

“Come on–how are you planning to make it up to me?” Curtis asked shamelessly, completely seizing the upper hand now.
Adriana glared at him. How could his skin be this thick?
“I’ve decided I’m inviting Gary over here for dinner and using that to make it up to you properly,” she said through gritted teeth.
Curtis immediately folded, pulling her into his arms. “Fine, fine, I’m wrong, it’s all my fault … Just don’t put me in the same room with him. We’ll definitely end up fighting.”
“What exactly happened between you and Gary to make things turn out like this? Is it just because, when you were a kid…” Adriana hesitated. “Just because you were forced to kill your own mother?”
