Nella staying quiet only made Alfred more irritated. The temper he usually controlled was starting to fray.

“Nella, I hate it when women make me guess. I married you because you were obedient and easy, not to cause trouble.”

He gritted his teeth, and Nella got the point.

He was basically saying she wasn’t obedient anymore. Choosing her had been a mistake.

Under the blanket, Nella pressed her hand to her chest.

It didn’t hurt much-just a dull, sour ache.

It was fine. There were still two months left, plenty of time for her to quit.

She let out a slow sigh. “Do you want me to say I’m mad at you?”

Alfred froze.

“Fine. I’m mad. Really mad. Why’d you leave me in Glacieroth for half a month and vanish?”

He was about to snap, but Nella cut him off.

“And then? You’ll probably say it was life or death, that you went to save someone. You’ll lecture me for overreacting, being unsympathetic, doubting you, or getting jealous.”

Alfred went quiet, frowning.

Nella chuckled, a hint of mockery in her voice. “See? If I’m mad, I’m wrong. If I’m not mad, I’m still wrong. So what exactly do you want me to do?”

“I…”

He couldn’t even speak. She was right.

If she got mad, he didn’t like it. If she stayed calm, he still didn’t like it.

The problem was him, not her.

He hadn’t called for half a month. That was on him. He had no right to scold her.

“But… if you’re not mad, then why are we sleeping in different rooms?”

His eyes dropped to the blanket she held tightly.

There was a faint hurt in his low, husky voice.

Her expression stayed neutral. She just calmly repeated herself, voice steady.

“I already said I haven’t been sleeping well. I’ll disturb your rest.”

“I don’t mind,” Alfred said quickly.

Nella stayed quiet after that.

But he could tell her silence meant she didn’t want to share a room.

Sure, she said she wasn’t mad, but the cold shoulder was obvious.

Forget it. I’d messed up this time.

There’s no point arguing just to be right.

“Fine. Your choice,” he said, giving in. “So … how many days?”

Nella blinked, confused. “What?”

“How long are we sleeping in separate rooms?”
