Nella hadn’t let herself be that relaxed in

Back in university, grabbing breakfast on the run to morning classes was normal.

But after marrying Alfred, the glow of her long-held crush made her unconsciously adopt his habits.

Walking and eating at the same time? That was not proper. It didn’t fit the perfect-wife image.

She couldn’t even count how many rules she’d forced on herself just because she was his wife.

Once she decided to let go of her feelings for Alfred, all those rules suddenly didn’t matter

anymore.

Standing in the elevator, she let out a long breath. The tightness in her chest eased a little.

Alfred sat frozen in the dining room, staring at the empty chair across from him, completely thrown off.

It was the first time he’d seen Nella texting while eating, and the first time in days that her smile felt real.

But that smile wasn’t for him.

She wasn’t starting arguments and still spoke to him warmly and politely. Yet he could sense her drifting away.

That hit him hard, and he felt panic rise within him as he jumped up from his chair.

Before he could figure out why he felt that sudden panic, he was already stepping into the elevator.

Nella had just left the building when hurried footsteps echoed behind her, along with Alfred’s strained voice calling her name.

“Nella.”

She stopped and turned, her eyes puzzled. “What’s wrong?”

He let out a relieved sigh, walked up to her, and said it like it was no big deal, “I’m heading out

too. I’ll give you a ride.”

Nella blinked, then quickly shook her head.

“No, it’s fine. The subway is right up ahead. With rush hour traffic, the train is faster. My coworker is waiting to switch shifts. I can’t keep them waiting.”

She delivered a solid, believable excuse and turned down his offer.

Honestly, it was odd for him to suddenly offer a ride to work.

Her hospital and the Keywood Group were in opposite directions. They didn’t even line up.

Alfred hadn’t expected her to refuse so directly. His face tightened.

A shadow of something darker flickered in his eyes.

“The next train is coming soon. I’m leaving.”

Nella waved politely and jogged toward the subway entrance.
