Nella wanted to tell Jasmine that she and Alfred weren’t that close, so there was no reason to get so worked up over him.
But to Jasmine, it sounded like Nella was still making excuses for him. That set her off.
“You’re still defending him? You’re his wife, but he doesn’t even have to be with you, and somehow he’s got time to hang out with that fake-sweet Zoey? You … you’re driving me crazy!”
Jasmine was practically bouncing with anger.
Nella tried to calm her down. “No, I’m not defending him. I just-”
“Just what? Don’t even think about making excuses for him!”
Jasmine was fuming. “Birds of a feather! Everyone in Mason’s circle is a jerk!”

She meant Nella’s mother, Felicia, who was also Jasmine’s graduate advisor.
“Got it. When I pick a boyfriend next time, I’ll be more careful.”
Once they checked back in, they went their separate ways to focus on work.
Because Nella had taken a long vacation, she was immediately handed a pile of patients waiting for surgery.
Cardiac surgery was always nonstop. That half month in Glacieroth had taken every favor she could get and every spare moment she could squeeze out, switching shifts with colleagues just to make it work.
