Near the end of the workday, Alfred’s phone rang. He picked it up and glanced at the screen. It was Zoey calling.
His brows tightened. A flash of annoyance crossed his face. He rejected the call without hesitation.
The other side did not give up. Maybe she didn’t believe it, or maybe she wasn’t willing to accept it. The phone rang again.
Alfred hung up once more.
This time, he didn’t stop there. He opened his settings and blocked Zoey’s number completely.
Zoey stared at her phone as the busy tone kept sounding. Her eyes widened in disbelief.
“Alfred isn’t answering my call?”
She refused to accept it and dialed again. This time, a cold female automated voice came through the line.
“The number you dialed is busy.”
Zoey froze for a second. Then she smiled, as if relieved.
“Alfred is on another call. That’s why he hung up on me. I shouldn’t have rushed him.”
She told herself that again and again, as if it could calm her heart.
Ten minutes later, she eagerly called again. The same automated voice answered.
Her face darkened, but she kept comforting herself.
“Why is that call taking so long?”
She sat stiffly on the couch, her face cold. She waited another half hour and called again. Still the same mechanical voice.
At that moment, no matter how much she wanted to deny it, Zoey knew the truth. Alfred had blocked her.
The Alfred who had always spoiled her had blocked her.

“How is that possible? How could this happen to me?”
Zoey couldn’t accept it.

For years, Alfred had indulged her without limits. She could never imagine that a man who once let her do anything would cut her off like this.
She opened Alfred’s WhatsApp and sent him a message.
“Alfred, I just got out of detention. It was terrifying in there. I’m really not okay mentally. Can you take me to see a therapist later for a checkup?
“Mom and Dad went to the hospital to stay with Patrick. I’m scared to go alone. I’m really afraid.”
After sending the two messages, she stared at her phone without blinking.
Half an hour passed. There was still no reply.
