Chapter 27 I Can’t Eat With You

Nella froze again, looking completely thrown off.

Alfred, of course, noticed her shock immediately.

She’d thought of every possible reason for him being here-except that he’d come just for her.

Her surprise lasted only a moment before she went back to her usual calm. She kept eating, asking casually, “So, what do you want?”

Her face said it all. She genuinely had no clue why he’d shown up.

Hadn’t she read his message?

He’d spent half the day twisting himself into knots, and she didn’t even realize it?

Alfred’s jaw tightened in frustration.

“I texted you about lunch at noon. You didn’t see it?”

Nella nearly choked on her bite before she remembered he had messaged her this morning.

Part of her didn’t want to deal with him.

Another part figured he probably asked on a whim and might cancel anyway. Better to pretend she didn’t see it.

She’d invited him plenty of times before. He’d always say yes at first, and then ditch her because something came up.

It was always work or Zoey. Even when she wasn’t back yet, he somehow made time for her.

That was probably what separated someone important from someone not.

After getting stood up too many times, Nella just stopped asking.

“Oh-sorry. I got stuck in a long surgery this morning and didn’t check my phone.”

She swallowed a little sting and gave him an apologetic smile.

Then, she pointed at her almost empty tray. “I’m about done. I can’t eat with you.

“If you want, you could grab something from the cafeteria.”

While saying it, she handed over her work badge, which also worked as her meal card. “You can

She was just being polite. Honestly, how could some big shot CEO even care about hospital cafeteria food?

She got ready for him to refuse so she could take off. But instead, he reached out, took the card, and said, “Thanks.”

Instant regret hit Nella.

She’d figured he’d say no, and he’d just walk away with her badge.

Every doctor used that badge for everything-paying, doors, cafeteria, and the hospital store. It was all linked.

Now that he was using it for food, she could only wait.

She frowned subconsciously.
