It wasn’t until late in the evening that Zoey came home, looking completely defeated.
“Well? Zoey, what did Alfred say?”

Zoey shook her head, her voice drained of energy. “I couldn’t find him. He blocked me on both my cell and my socials. I went to Emerald Vista Bay this afternoon, and the gatekeeper wouldn’t even let me through the front entrance.”
As she spoke, she looked like she’d been stabbed.
Her eyes turned red. Tears started pooling.
“Dad… am I really losing Alfred?”
She still couldn’t accept it. Her gaze grew more and more obsessed.
“I was so close… so damn close to becoming his wife. Why did everything fall apart like this?
“If I hadn’t gone abroad back then, none of this would’ve happened. If I stayed, I would’ve never left Alfred’s side. Nella wouldn’t have had the chance to take my place. I would’ve already been married to him.”
Her red-rimmed eyes brimmed with resentment as she stared at Norris.
“This is all because of you and Patrick. They were already going to take the money. You still forced me to leave the country and made me miss my shot with Alfred.”
Norris had already been fuming from everything going on with the company. Now hearing Zoey shift the blame onto him like she was the victim sent his anger straight through the roof.
He slapped her hard across the face.
“You have the nerve to bring that up? If you hadn’t gotten yourself into a scandal and left someone dead, you think I would’ve sent you away? Go ahead! March over to Alfred and tell him exactly why I shipped you out!”
Zoey had been furious from the slap. Her face twisted with rage.
But the moment she heard that last line, all the color drained from her face. Her anger vanished. Panic took over.
“Dad, please don’t be mad. I was wrong. I shouldn’t have said that.”
She reached out and tugged at Norris’s sleeve like a kid begging for forgiveness.

“Dad, today’s Sunday. Alfred wasn’t at the office. But tomorrow, once Keywood Group opens, I’ll
go
find him there.”
“You better make it count.”
Monday came fast.
It also marked Nella’s first day teaching as a medical school instructor.
She got up early, got ready, and packed Marshal into the stroller. Then she started walking toward the university.
The campus dining hall had everything you could imagine. Nella pushed Marshal along in that direction.
Along the way, a few students recognized them and came over with bright smiles.
“Morning, Nella!”
“Oh my gosh, is this Marshal? He’s adorable!”
“Hi, Nella!”
The people kept saying hi.
