Zoey barely made it to the security gate between the lobby and the elevators before getting blocked.
No badge, no entry.
Her jaw clenched.
Fuming, she stomped up to the front desk.
“Buzz me through. I need to speak with Alfred.”
The receptionist kept her polished smile but didn’t even try to hide the disinterest. “Do you have an appointment, ma’am?”
That did it.
“An appointment? Are you kidding me? Are you blind or just slow?!”
The receptionist didn’t flinch.
“I’m afraid I can’t let you up without a verified appointment. That’s company policy.”
She kept smiling like it was customer service training day, but mentally, she’d already rolled her
about 50 times.

She seriously used to be a fan of this woman?
Zoey Mack? The one who threw herself at a man who didn’t even want her, then played victim when it blew up in her face? Gross.
Zoey’s face twisted again, but she forced the rage down. She had an important meeting with Alfred.
She dropped her tone and tried to act calm.
“Alfred’s expecting me. Don’t believe me? Call him.”
The receptionist hesitated. Zoey did look pretty confident, but after what happened last time, she wasn’t taking chances.
“If Mr. Keywood invited you, then I’m sure you have his number. Go ahead and call him.”
Zoey’s fake calm cracked.

Crap. She was still blocked. Alfred hadn’t unblocked her number.

“My phone’s dead. Are you seriously gonna stand in my way? If Alfred misses something important because of you, he’s not gonna be the one losing his job. You will.”
She said it so matter-of-factly, the receptionist blinked.
But letting her up without confirmation? That could end her if Alfred got mad.
She weighed her options, then reached for the phone and called upstairs.
The response came fast.
Her face tightened.
“Yes, sir.” She hung up, stood, and grabbed a temporary badge. Her tone softened. “Right this way, Ms. Mack.”
Zoey raised her chin, smug as ever. She gave the receptionist a nasty look and jabbed a finger at her.
“I’ll remember you.”
Then she spun on her heel and strutted toward the elevator.
