His jaw was clenched so tight his cheeks puffed out slightly. He stared straight at Wesley, his voice dropping even lower.
“Even if I were getting a divorce from Sunny, until the last second, she and I are still legally married. If you’re planning to swoop in, you’d better figure out your place first.”
The second Alfred said that, the smile on Wesley’s face started to fade.
The tension between them was so sharp it made Nella furrow her brows.
Worried that Alfred might come after Wesley just because of her, she quickly stepped in front of him and looked up at Alfred.
“Just because you’re that kind of person doesn’t mean everyone else is.”
Alfred stared at her. Seeing how she was shielding Wesley with such defiance made the light in his eyes go dim.
“Don’t insult me. And don’t insult my colleague either.”
The moment she said that, Wesley gave her a strange look.
His lips tightened, and he thought to himself, Alfred kind of nailed it with that insult.
But Alfred had heard what he needed to hear.
In Nella’s words, she naturally put herself and Wesley on the same side. And Alfred, her lawful husband, was clearly the outsider now.
His
eyes
darkened with disappointment and pain. He looked at her and asked quietly,
“Are you seriously defending him right now?”
What else would she be doing?
Nella gave him a strange look, like she couldn’t believe he was wasting breath on such a pointless question.
For someone who used to be so measured with his words, Alfred was really starting to sound ridiculous.
Still, she couldn’t deny that if Alfred really wanted to come after Wesley-who had no connections here-it wouldn’t even take him five minutes.

She didn’t want Wesley dragged down just because her relationship with Alfred had become so toxic.
So before Alfred could snap, she added,
“He’s not just my colleague. He saved my life. Back in Glacieroth, if he hadn’t stepped in, I don’t even know how I would’ve survived those two weeks.”
That one line shattered whatever justification Alfred had left.
It hit him square in the one place he could never face head-on-his guilt.
“You of all people, Mr. Keywood, should understand what it means to repay someone who saved your life. I’m sure you understand why I’m doing this for him, right?”
Her voice was sincere. She wasn’t trying to throw shade or twist the knife.
But Alfred still heard the sting in every
word.
And the worst part was, she was just following the example he’d set for her. He had nothing to say back.
“You keep saying we’re still married. If we are, then we’re supposed to act like one. That means if I owe my colleague a debt, then you, as my legal husband, should want to repay him too. Don’t you think, Mr. Keywood?”
