Felicia couldn’t force Alfred to respond to her daughter one-sided feelings just because her daughter once wanted it that way.
And by the same token, now that her daughter had let go of that relationship, there was no reason for her to accept Alfred as a son-in-law anymore.
Especially since this son-in-law had only ever existed in name.
Still, a guest was a guest, and Felicia couldn’t bring herself to openly ask someone to leave.
“Alfred, is that you? Come in and have a seat.”
“Thank you, Felicia.”
When Alfred said “Felicia,” it came straight from the heart, his tone even carrying a hint of ingratiation.
The smile on his face looked completely sincere.
That was, until he saw Wesley with his sleeves rolled up walking out of the kitchen as naturally as if he belonged there.
The smile on Alfred’s face instantly faded.
“Gosh, Cousin, what a coincidence. What are you doing at my parents-in-law’s place too?”
He deliberately stressed the words “parents-in-law,” as if declaring ownership.
Wesley didn’t rise to it and simply answered honestly, “They invited me for dinner. I didn’t expect to see you too, Cousin. Did they invite you as well?”
That one sentence made Alfred’s expression subtly change, embarrassment flashing across his face.
Compared to Wesley being warmly invited, Alfred’s unannounced arrival suddenly seemed ridiculous.
Clifford was busy in the kitchen and hadn’t come out, while Felicia watched the two of them spar verbally, her expression a little awkward.
Just as she was about to say something, Wesley suddenly waved toward the couch.
“Sunny, come here.”
Hearing the name “Sunny,” Alfred’s previously steady gate instinctively shifted toward Nella’s face.
The next second, though, it was the Devon Rex cat sprawled on Marshal, kicking wildly with its legs, meowing in response as it ran toward Wesley, awkward moving both paws together.
Wesley crouched down, scooped Sunny into his arms, and kissed it. “No misbehaving. You’re only getting this meal because of me, you know. Show some gratitude, got it?”
Sunny didn’t understand a word, but that didn’t stop it from meowing enthusiastically at Wesley, providing plenty of emotional feedback.
Alfred, however, understood exactly what Wesley mean

He was so angry that he actually laughed.
But when he realized Wesley had named his cat Sunny, his expression darkened even further.
That kind of obvious intention was impossible to miss.
“Cousin, you named this cat using Nella’s nickname?” Allred asked coldly.

Wesley’s hand paused slightly as he stroked the cat. He lifted his eyes to meet Alfred’s accusatory stare and smiled.
“Funny coincidence, right? I only found out after naming my cat that Nella’s nickname was the same.”
