Alfred, you really are the worst.

The more Alfred thought about it, the more his heart ached.

Snowflakes landed on his trembling lashes, making the redness at the corners of his eyes look even more

raw.

He didn’t dare to turn around. He didn’t have the nerve to ask her for another chance.

He thought that letting her be with Wesley was the best thing he could do for her.

“The snow’s really coming down now. We should head back.”

Seeing that they had gone through most of the fireworks Wesley brought, Nella brushed the snow off her shoulders and turned to him.

She studied the expression on his face and asked, “Wesley, do you feel better now that we’ve set off all the fireworks?”

Wesley paused for a moment, then smiled and patted Nella on the head.

“Did you stay out here with me this whole time because you were worried I was in a bad mood?”

Nella smiled and didn’t deny it.

“It’s New Year’s. You should be happy, not moping around.”

Wesley nodded. “You’re right.”

When they got back, Wesley walked her upstairs.

The moment he got home, he received a call from Alfred.

Wesley’s gaze darkened instantly, but he still answered.

“Looking for me, Alfred?”

The way he addressed his name was dripping with mockery and sarcasm.

Alfred’s low voice came through the other end. “Tell me what you want. I’ll give it to you.”

Wesley’s expression froze for a split second before he le out a soft laugh.

“What’s that supposed to mean, Alfred?”

“Wesley, I don’t have time to beat around the bush. I knew there’s more to you and Aunt Tolina suddenly coming back to the family.”

Wesley didn’t respond.

“Whatever you want, I’ll give it to you. But you are not to use Nella in any way.”

At that, a cold glint flickered in Wesley’s eyes.

“Playing the lovesick fool in front of me now, Alfred?”

Alfred said nothing.

“Relax. I would never use her against you. Not now, not ver.”

Wesley’s voice was ice-cold.

There was a long pause on the other end before Alfred spoke again, “I hope you mean that. And I meant what I said too. Whatever you want, come find me.”

With that, Alfred hung up.

Wesley stood at the doorway, his face half-hidden in shadow.

Outside, fireworks shot into the sky, lighting up the dark night and illuminating the grim expression on his face.

The holidays flew by.

In the blink of an eye, everyone who had gone home for the break were heading back to the city.

College students were returning to campus to begin the new semester.
