Look at that. When a man has someone in his heart, just thinking about seeing them is enough to make him hum a little tune.

Nella couldn’t tell whether she was envying Rolf’s girlfriend, or sighing over her own quiet crush that never went anywhere.

She didn’t take up much of Rolf’s time. After asking a couple of quick questions, she went to check on Marshal one last time. Seeing that he’d already fallen asleep, she headed out to grab a ride back to Emerald Vista Bay.

When she opened her phone, she realized she had missed messages and calls.

Unlocking it, she saw they were from Alfred, sent an hour earlier.

Alfred went to the hospital to pick me up?

She checked the time. The message had been sent just a few minutes after she’d called a rideshare.

Her phone had been on silent while she was seeing patients, and she’d forgotten to turn the sound back on after work.

That was why she hadn’t noticed Alfred’s message or his calls at all.

At this point, replying didn’t seem to matter anymore.

After calling the ride, Nella put her phone back into her bag.

Back at Emerald Vista Bay.

When she opened the door, the house was pitch-black.

Alfred isn’t back yet?

That was her first thought. She reached out to turn on the light, and in the darkness, came a slightly hoarse voice.

“You’re back?”

Nella was badly startled.

At the same time, the entryway light came on.

She saw Alfred sitting expressionless on the living room couch, looking at her with a dark,

“Why didn’t you turn on the lights?”

Nella had been shaken, and her face didn’t look great either.

“Didn’t you see the message I sent you?”

Thinking of the message Alfred had sent her, Nella replied, “Sorry. My phone was on silent.”

Alfred was instantly speechless.

He realized it then. Nella looked easygoing and gentle on the surface.

But in reality, one casual sentence from her was enough to shut you up on the spot.

If you pushed the issue even a little more, you’d only end up looking unreasonable.

Alfred suddenly stood up from the couch and strode toward Nella.

As if carrying a whole night’s worth of pent-up anger, even his footsteps were heavy with it.

“Where-”

Just as Alfred was about to speak, a familiar men’s cologne hit his nose.

Patchouli.

Every word he was about to say got stuck in his throat.

With a scent this strong, it couldn’t possibly still linger if it were just from brushing past

someone.

Clearly, the man wearing that patchouli perfume had been very close to her.

So close that the scent clung to her and refused to fade.

At that moment, Alfred couldn’t even tell what he was feeling.

Only an uncontrollable surge of anger and a familiar sense of panic flooded his chest.

His expression shifted several times. Nella didn’t understand why and didn’t ask.

After taking off her coat, she was about to head inside when Alfred grabbed her arm.

His grip was a little too tight, yet it felt as if he were forcing himself to restrain the emotions churning inside him, his gaze deep as it settled on her face.
