Chapter 99 You Weren’t Like This Before

After pouring Alfred another cup of water, she returned to the infusion room.

“Dr. Milo, where did you go just now? Your husband went out to look for you.”

The nurse spoke casually when she saw Nella.

Nella stopped short. “He went to look for me? He’s done already?”

The nurse covered her mouth, teasing Nella with her eyes.

“I didn’t expect him to be so attached to you. You were only gone for a bit, and he ran out to look for you before his IV was even done.”

As soon as she finished speaking, Alfred walked back in behind Nella.

The nurse gestured with her eyes toward Nella’s back.

“Look, your clingy husband is back.”

Nella turned around and saw Alfred standing there, expressionless.

The hand with the IV hung low, and the blood had already started flowing back.

She quickly set the paper cup

aside.

Stepping forward, she grabbed his hand and raised it, then took the IV bag from his other hand.

“Why are you wandering around for no reason?”

Nella frowned.

Alfred stood still, lowering his gaze to look at her for a long moment before saying,

“I went to the restroom.”

Nella frowned as she rehung the IV bag.

Then she brought over the warm water she’d poured and handed him the medication the doctor had prescribed.

“Take your meds first.”

Alfred took the pills without a word.

Nella sat quietly beside him, scrolling on her phone.

From her gestures, it looked like she was flipping through photos.

A gentle smile curved her lips, as if whoever was in the photos made her very happy.

Alfred stared silently at the corners of Nella’s mouth as they kept lifting higher.

From the moment she sat down, that smile hadn’t faded once.

He thought again of the lingering reluctance in her eyes when she’d parted with that man earlier.

Heh.

If she’s that reluctant, why didn’t she go in and keep the guy company during his IV? Why come back here instead?

Heat balled in his chest with nowhere to go.

So that man was the one who smelled like patchouli?

The man she kept messaging nonstop, even while having dinner with me?

He still remembered that morning when Nella accidentally tapped on that man’s voice message.

The man had said there was an emergency patient.

Is he also a doctor at this hospital?

An ER doctor?

The more Alfred thought about it, the more that fire in his chest spiraled out of control.

“Where did you go? It took you forever just to get some water.”

Nella finally looked up from her phone and glanced at him.

“I ran into a friend and chatted for a bit.”

“And you just left me here?”

Alfred’s voice was low, carrying an unmistakable sense of disappointment.

Nella closed Marshal’s photo album and looked straight at Alfred’s dark expression.
