I gasped for air when he suddenly grabbed my waist and pulled me against him, the movement so fast and unexpected that I barely had time to react. My balance vanished, and the next thing I knew, I was on his lap, my hands braced against his chest, my heart slamming violently against my ribs.
“W-We can’t,” I stuttered, my voice shaking as my eyes flew to his. “You’re hurt.”
His lips curved into a slow, dangerous smirk, one that didn’t match the blood, the bruises, or the exhaustion etched into his face. “I’ve endured much more than this,” he said calmly, his voice low and steady. “I think I can handle a little wound.”
I frowned instantly, anger and fear colliding in my chest. My hands pressed against his shoulders, trying to create space, trying to ground him. “That’s not a little wound,” I shot back. “You almost died!”
His grip on my waist tightened slightly. “But I didn’t.” He chuckled.
“But it doesn’t mean that you’re allowed to strain yourself,” I insisted.
He smiled devilishly, “I don’t have to. You can be on top. I’ll let you take charge just like you did last time,” he teased.
I can feel my face burning in embarrassment. How can this man talk about things like this after what we’ve been through?
“You’re insane. We’re not doing it. You have to rest.”
“Hmmm…” he moaned as he buried his face against my neck, smelling my skin. “Are you sure I can’t persuade you?”
I can feel his warm breath against my skin, and as much as I hate to admit it, my self-restraint wasn’t that firm as well.
My throat went dry when I felt his tongue licking my neck. “H-Hunter
“Hmmm?” he replied as he continued taunting me.
“S-Stop…” I said, in my faint attempt to protest.
Hunter’s lips curved into a slow, knowing smile against my skin when he felt my hesitation, when he heard the weakness in my voice. He didn’t pull away. If anything, he leaned in closer, his arms tightening around me just enough to make it impossible to ignore him.
“Stop?” he murmured softly, his voice low and warm, brushing against my car. “That’s not what your body’s saying.”
I swallowed hard, my pulse racing, my hands gripping his shoulders in a weak attempt to keep some distance between us. “Hunter,” I warned, trying to sound firm, trying to sound in control, even as my heart betrayed

He chuckled quietly, the sound deep and dangerous, his breath still warm against my neck. “You always say my name like that when you’re losing,” he teased. “Like you’re trying to convince yourself instead of me.”
While he was saying that, his hand was already starting to unbutton my shirt. It was a clear indication that he has no plan of stopping.
His fingers brushed the first button of my shirt, and my breath caught instantly. The movement wasn’t rushed, like he was fully aware of the effect it had on me.
I grabbed his wrist instinctively, not pushing him away, not pulling him closer either, just holding him there in that dangerous space between restraint and surrender. “Hunter,” I whispered again, my voice barely steady, my heartbeat loud in my ears.
He lifted his head slightly, just enough for me to feel his smile against my skin. “You saying my name doesn’t sound like a warning but more like an invitation,” he murmured softly. ”
His thumb traced slow circles over my knuckles, his grip gentle but unyielding. He didn’t force the button open, didn’t rush anything. He just stayed there, close enough to make my thoughts unravel, close enough to make my resolve shake.
“You’re trying to fight it,” he whispered. “But you don’t have to.”
My breath hitched, my grip tightening on his wrist. “Someone has to have self-control. Clearly, you’re the one who doesn’t have one,” I said, even though my voice betrayed me.
“Am I? Shall we put that to a test?” he challenged me. And before I could even say anything, he gently grabbed my nape and pulled me into a passionate kiss.
His hand cupped the back of my neck, pulling me toward him before I could stop it. His fingers threaded into my hair as he pulled me toward him slowly, giving me no time to think. His lips met mine in a deep, consuming kiss that stole the air from my lungs, warm and intense, charged with everything we had been holding back since the moment he walked into that hallway covered in blood.
The world narrowed to the heat between us, to the steady pressure of his mouth, to the way his body fit against mine like it had always known where it belonged. His grip wasn’t rough, but it was possessive, grounding, and full of intention, and it sent a rush of conflicting emotions through me all at once.
I tried to resist, tried to remind myself of everything that had happened, of the chaos, the danger, but my body betrayed every rational thought. My hands slid up his arms, not pushing him away, not fully pulling him closer either, trapped in that space between surrender and restraint.
My breath disappeared instantly, my thoughts scattering as the world narrowed down to the feel of his mouth, the warmth of his body, and the strength in the hand holding my nape.
I tried to break the kiss, and I was left breathless, my hands pressing against his chest, “Hunter…” I whispered, my voice unsteady, caught between frustration and something far more dangerous.
He smiled down at me, slow and satisfied, his eyes dark with amusement and triumph. “That,” he murmured, “was your self-control talking?”
I glared at him, even as my face burned and my heart raced. “You’re so full of yourself,” I said.
