Joseph’s POV
Unfortunately, we didn’t sleep long. I had to wake her up at ten—we needed to help our friends prepare for Caroline and Draven’s wedding. As expected, she woke up hungover, so I gave her a painkiller, an anti-nausea pill, and an antacid, along with a glass of orange juice.
"Can you stand up?" I asked.
"Ugh..." she complained, "I can drink. Why did you let me drink so much?" I laughed.
"Because you were angry with me." I hugged her and placed a gentle peck on her lips. "I would do anything for you, absolutely anything!"
"I want to drink but don’t want to be hungover," she said, resting her head against my chest.
"You can’t have both, especially after drinking that much." I laughed and kissed the top of her head. "Come on, let’s have breakfast. You’ll feel better."
I prepared breakfast for her: an omelet, fruit, orange juice, coconut water, and black coffee. She ate and drank both the orange juice and coffee.
"Drink some coconut water to rehydrate, nightingale," I urged.
"I don’t want to go," she answered like a pouting child.
"But you have to." She picked up the glass and took a sip.
"Let’s go. I’ll take you home to get ready. Eleanor will pick you up."
"I haven’t forgiven you yet," she complained.
"I know, but I’ll keep trying."
"You’re such a pain," she said with a slight smile, and I couldn’t resist giving her a gentle kiss.
The day was busy, and I didn’t receive any messages from Ava for the rest of it. There was poker at Ryan’s house that evening, but I needed to see her first. So before heading to Ryan’s, I went to Nina’s apartment.
"Joseph, what do you want? I need a good night’s sleep tonight," Ava said as she opened the door. She was wearing leopard-print short pajamas.
I walked in, closed the door, pulled her into my arms, and kissed her—a deep and passionate kiss. When I released her, we were both breathless.
"I just wanted to see you before going to sleep," I said, caressing her face.
"I haven’t forgiven you," she affirmed again.
"I know. But I’ll keep trying." I smiled, and she couldn’t help but smile back.
"I’ll pick you up at ten tomorrow for the wedding," I said, holding her tightly against me.
"Eleanor ruined my plans!" I pretended to be angry, "But I’ll be here at eight."
I called both of them, but neither answered. I then called Sophia’s father, but no one picked up. Damn! I slammed my fist against the steering wheel; I had to go to the club.
"Don’t go," Dean warned sharply."This smells like deception.Ava just started trusting us again."
"But what if she really is trying to hurt herself?" I argued.
"’Then let someone else handle it," Dean growled. "This feels like a trap, and Ava needs us more than that female needs our rescue."
I couldn’t just ignore it, so I hurriedly drove off.
When I arrived, Sophia and Vanessa were in the parking lot, leaning against Vanessa’s car. Sophia saw me and came over, jumping onto my neck.
"Baby! I knew you cared about me! You love me!" I struggled to push Sophia off of me.
"Sophia, what the hell is going on?" I asked angrily.
"I knew you would come. You do care about me. You love me!" she repeated, and I realized it was a trap.
"I hate you both! I can’t believe you made up this absurd story to lure me here." I was furious as I turned back to my car. "Don’t call me again!"
I left the place, tires screeching. But what I didn’t know then was that the damage had already been done.
