Ava’s POV
I thought this nightmare was finally over, but it wasn’t. My mother and grandmother were on vacation, they weren’t under any life threat, so who was sending these vague yet clearly targeted threatening letters?
I let Joseph into the room and took the envelope from his hand. I knew he noticed my tension.
I didn’t want to keep too many secrets from Joseph anymore. Perhaps I should start by letting him know about the difficulties in my life. After all, isn’t honesty what’s needed between lovers?
I opened the letter in front of him. Immediately, my entire body trembled, and tears spilled from my eyes. Another threatening letter, but this time so obvious I could recognize who sent it at first glance.
Joseph pulled me into his arms, his hands gently stroking my back, trying to comfort me.
"May I see the letter?" he asked, and I nodded. He kissed the top of my head, took the letter, and read it aloud.
"Miss me, my beauty? You’d better stop seeing that useless Alpha. You’re mine, Ava. When I get out—and it won’t be long—I’ll come back to claim what’s mine. After I kill that bitch mother of yours, that worthless Alpha, and that ridiculous Nina, you’ll be on your knees begging to be with me."
With each word he read, my fear deepened. In the previous letters, he hadn’t been this explicit. I was starting to feel afraid.
I handed Joseph the several threatening letters I’d received before, and he read them silently. He held me the entire time until I calmed down and stopped crying.
"Ava, how long have you been receiving these letters?" Joseph asked, seemingly trying to control his anger.
"For a while now. But they were sporadic and from an unknown sender. I only knew Isaac was locked up in the pack dungeon, so I never suspected it was him. I thought it had stopped, but now it’s started again," I explained.
"Then why didn’t you tell me?" Joseph’s hands clenched into tight fists.
"Because this started happening when your father first arrived, and you already had so much to worry about. I didn’t want to add to your troubles. Then everything else happened and... well..." I tried to explain, but I understood his anger.
"Ava, even if the world were ending, I would want to know if something happened to you. You can’t keep things like this from me!" Joseph complained.
"Joseph, look..." He didn’t even let me speak.
"Ava! Damn it! I have ways to protect you. And we’re a couple, we need to share things with each other. Some lunatic is threatening you, and you don’t tell me." He was getting more agitated, but I gave a bitter smile.
Soon after, Joseph embraced me from behind.
"Ava, I was wrong. I should have come to you immediately. But I didn’t, I didn’t tell you, and look what happened. Now you say we’re not a couple, and here I am begging for your forgiveness." Joseph kissed my cheek.
"Joseph, look, we had such a great weekend. I also found out my mother went on vacation, so I’m completely relieved. I just want to sleep," I said, turning to face him.
"You know your mother went on vacation? Didn’t Odelia tell you she was leaving?" he asked, confused.
I explained casually, "I had a fight with my mother. She went away to clear her head without telling me, and it made me worry."
Joseph nodded with partial understanding, not pressing the matter further.
"We had such a beautiful day today! I want to spend thousands more days like this with you!" he smiled, holding me close. "But to do that, we need to talk about all the awkward things and all our worries, and promise that from now on, no matter how difficult, we won’t hide anything from each other."
"You’re right," I sighed. But I needed time to get there.
"Great, because I want to know why that female gang you’re in didn’t tell me anything," Joseph said, taking two mugs from the cupboard, pouring honey into each before filling them with tea.
"Gang?" I asked, laughing.
"Exactly, you’re all in it together, highly organized, bent on world domination. And us men? You’ve got us wrapped around your little fingers." He put the mugs on the table and pulled me onto his lap. I was still laughing when he asked his next question: "When were you planning to tell me that bastard Steward has been pursuing you?"
After finishing our tea, he washed the cups and took my hand, saying, "Let’s go to bed."
I had once nestled in the arms of this man who betrayed me and broke my heart, yet now he was promising me love. His gentle caresses sent me to heaven, with happiness enveloping me like a cloud, making me long for everything with him. But he had also taken me to hell, and my heart still feared another betrayal.
The next day, we woke up early, prepared breakfast, and enjoyed it together in a relaxed atmosphere. Afterward, I texted the lawyer to meet at noon. Joseph was adamant about accompanying me, and he did. The lawyer said he would request the judge to launch an investigation and thought it was good that Joseph was involved.
"Ava, I’ll pick you up after work tonight. I heard the bed was delivered, and my employees have already moved my things. I want you to see it," Joseph said as he dropped me off at the office.
"Wow, that’s efficient! But I can’t tonight," I replied, and his smile disappeared.
"Why not?"
"Because there’s an emergency girls’ meeting today. Nina is in trouble."
"Is her problem named Jace Moreno?"
"That’s the one!" I said with a laugh.
"I can pick you up afterward."
"Better not, I’ll be tired. Let’s talk tomorrow."
"Stop punishing me, Ava!" Joseph said sweetly, resting his head on the headrest. He looked adorable with that pleading expression.
"My friends are more important than you." I quickly kissed his cheek before getting out of the car, leaving him alone with a bright smile on his face.
