I pushed the quarters door open and rushed in and everybody’s eyes immediately turned to me.
I rested my back against the door as I tried to catch my breath.
My heart was beating so loud I was sure everyone could hear it and I was visibly shaking.
They were all staring at me like they’ve seen a ghost.
I ignored them all as I rushed to my bed and climbed in, immediately covering myself with the blanket.
But then the whisper started.
‘How is she alive?’
‘Nobody has ever come out alive.’
‘She’s fat and ugly what do you expect?’
I shut out all the voices as I tried not to replay everything that just happened but I couldn’t.
The memories won’t stop rushing back.
Those eyes. Hollow, dark, merciless.
His strength was something else entirely, how had I survived?
Was it luck or was it because I was ugly like they say?
No. That look in his eyes, when he had kissed me, it was like he wanted to claim me until whatever it was possessed him and his eyes turned black.
I shook my head coming out of my thoughts.
It doesn’t matter what happened back there, what matters is that I survived.
I needed to leave. I needed to leave this godforsaken place.
I closed my eyes trying to get some rest but sleep wouldn’t come because as I closed my eyes he was there.
Those haunting eyes. That terrifying voice.
I tossed and turned but still nothing happened and every single time I hear the faintest of sound I feel like they’re coming to take me back to him.
Somehow between all the tossing and turning I was drawn into the arms of a sleep.
But even in my sleep, he was still there.

I woke up with a start as my hand immediately went to my chest.
I had a nightmare and I saw him, telling me to come to him with those black eyes and blood on his hands.
A shiver went down my spine.
I threw the blanket off myself and climbed out of bed but immediately noticed the shift in air.
Everyone was looking at me weirdly.
What’s going on? Why the hell were they looking at me like I have something disgusting on me.
“You know she’s the Alpha’s daughter from our pack. Even her father didn’t want her.” One of the girls whispered but it was loud enough for everyone to hear and gasps followed.
“She must be a witch.” Another person said and I couldn’t help but furrow my brows in confusion.
Wait, was this all because I survived last night?
“Maybe she carries a curse of her own.” Another girl said and the others chuckled.
“By curse do you mean fatness and ugliness?” Another girl chipped in and they all laughed about it.
“Oh really? You all are going to laugh about the fact that I survived last night.”
“Oh darling we all know the king didn’t touch you, he must have been too disgusted to.” One of them said and I turned to her.
She had blonde hair and eyes filled with disdain.
“What are you talking about?” I asked as I folded my hands.
“Look at you, you’re…what’s the right word…” she said, making a thinking gesture.
“Ugly and disgusting.” Another girl said and the other girl snapped her fingers.
“Right. That’s it. The king must have kicked her out and to save face she came in here running like he touched her. We all know that nobody ever returned from the King’s bed alive.”
“Can you all listen to yourself?” I said in disbelief.
“You’re all turning against me because I’m alive, shouldn’t you be asking how I’m doing or how it’s possible that I’m here with you all?”
“Can’t believe even death rejected her,” the one girl who has always been timid said and the others laughed.
“You know what? I don’t care what you all think but I hope your time with the king comes sooner than expected.” that shut everyone up immediately.
“We might have all been sent here to die but that doesn’t make us the same. You’re ugly, we’re not.”
“I see.” I said simply before shaking my head.
“I’d like to see how beautiful you’ll look in death.”
She opened her mouth to respond but I didn’t wait to hear what she had to say. I walked away.
I opened the bathroom door and stepped in, closing it with more force than necessary.
I looked at myself in the mirror and my eyes burned.
I’ve been mocked about the way I look all my life but I don’t believe anything they say, because whenever I look at myself in the mirror, all I see is a girl who everyone is jealous of and to make themselves feel better they decided to gang up against me.
I sighed as I stepped under the shower and let the water rain down on me, washing away everything that happened last night. They can say what they want to say but I don’t give a fuck.
By the time I stepped out of the bathroom I felt better and filled with a renewed hope.
The girls didn’t stop looking at me with disgust.
We all filed out for breakfast and even though I was minding my business they just won’t stop.
That’s how obsessed with me they were.
I couldn’t help but roll my eyes as I ate silently.
When I finished eating, I took my tray to go wash my plate when someone blocked me.
It was the blondie.
“Get out of my way.” I warned but she just crossed her arms glaring at me.
I squared my shoulders, refusing to flinch. Her glare was sharp, but I’d survived worse than dirty looks and sharp tongues. I survived him.
“I said move,” I repeated, slower this time, my voice low and steady.
She didn’t. She tilted her chin instead, that smug little smirk playing on her lips like she thought she had me figured out.
“Don’t piss me off.” I warned.
“Or what?”
I was just about to give her a piece of my mind when a commanding voice rang through the room. “Enough!”
I slowly turned and there she was, the bearer of bad news. The mistress.
Her eyes scanned the room and everyone stood up straight, the air suddenly filled with tension.
“What did I say about misbehaving ladies?” She said as she tilted her head.
Nobody moved. Nobody spoke. It was like everyone was holding their breath.
And then-
Her eyes scanned the room until they landed on me.
I didn’t like the look in her eyes even for one bit. In fact I didn’t like it any time she looked at me. Especially when she smiles.
“Emilia, His Majesty has requested for you.”
My heart sank.
