Maximus.
I haven’t heard anyone say my name out loud since my mother died.
I should have been mad. This woman has done nothing but get on my nerves-challenge me.
Not even my Beta can take up my name on his lips. But this woman, she has done several things that others would have been dead if they tried.
The only thing stopping me from killing her was because I knew she was special and there was this fire in her I haven’t seen in any woman.
It wasn’t false bravery like the other women. It was like she had nothing to lose so she might as well face me head on.
“You’re playing with fire Emilia,”
“I’ve been burnt before, it’s nothing,” she said, eyes staring straight into mine.
“Burnt and came out unscratched and called it luck.” I said and something flashed in her eyes but it was gone before I could make out what it was.
“Stop interrogating me, my life is none of your business,” she spat in irritation.
“It is, have you forgotten your father gave you to me…willingly?” I said and her hands clenched in anger.
She looked away from me as her eyes came down. I saw the hurt in her eyes she tried to hide but I said nothing.
I just needed to remind her who I was and what power I had over her.
“You have to keep that attitude in check…know your place Emilia,” I warned as I sat on the bed and brought my finger to her chin and lifted her head up.
“I have been patient with you, you don’t want to see the dark side of me, it’s pretty ugly.”
She opened her mouth like she was going to say something but stopped herself, instead she was pulled away from my touch, pressing her back on the head of the bed.
“Give me names.” I said and she looked at me with her brows furrowed in confusion.
“What name?” She asked,
“Tell me who stabbed you,”
“I don’t need you cleaning my mess for me, I can handle my own problems,” She said, climbing out of the bed and this time I didn’t stop her.
“Whether you tell me or not, I have my way of getting any information I want.” I said as she started making her way to the door.
Just as she reached the door she stopped without turning to me.
“Can you please just leave me alone. I’m begging you.” And with that she opened the door and walked out, slamming the door so hard, the room shook.
I sat there on my bed thinking of any possible answer to questions that kept ringing in my head but nothing made sense. When she was brought into the hospital room, she looked pale. The lines on the heart monitor were flat.
It was like she died and came back to life and she woke up acting like this was normal. Like it had happened a thousand times.
She didn’t have a wolf. I couldn’t feel one. I am the king and I can feel anyone with a wolf. It’s like hers is dead or doesn’t exist. Then where did such fast healing come from?
I stood up from the bed and walked towards the door.
I walked out of the room, closing the door behind me.
“Your Majesty,” Lucien said with a bow, his eyes shining with questions I didn’t have answers to.
But there was something I already had an answer to.
Something I needed to take care of that couldn’t wait.
“The girl who stabbed Emilia, bring her to me.”

As soon as I entered the quarters it felt like everyone held their breath. Their eyes were like they had seen a ghost. One of the girls even screamed as she hid under her blanket, like if I was really a ghost that would save her.
I ignored them as I made my way to my bed.
The blondie Liana looked pale. She looked like she was choking on something.
Maybe the apology I didn’t care for.
Her mouth opened and closed but no words came out.
“I thought she was dead,” I heard one of the girls whisper in fear but nobody responded.
Everyone was too scared to.
That was great, so they’d leave me the fuck alone.
I turned my back to them as I drew the blanket over my body, ready to get some sleep.
But then again, in this place, sleep was a luxury.
The door suddenly pushed open so fast it hit the wall, the sound echoing through the room.
“Well, well, ladies,”
Of course, the bearer of bad news is back.
I swear if she says my name again I’ll ignore her.
I didn’t even sit up this time like the others. I could feel her eyes on me but I didn’t give any reaction or acknowledge her.
“One of you will be going to meet the king tonight.”
Another painful reminder that I spent the whole day unconscious when I could have been studying the entire layout of this palace for my escape.
One day already gone.
The sound of the mistress’s heel echoed in the room and I felt her stop by my bedside, I ignored her.
“Interesting.” I heard her mutter before I felt her presence disappear from my bedside.
The tension in the room was thick, the type that only the mistress can bring.
“Liana,” she finally said, her voice sickly sweet.
“You’ll be seeing the king tonight,”
My head turned immediately and they landed on the blondie, something dark and twisted inside me laughed as I watched her stand up from her bed with shaky legs.
That sass she had when she was stabbing me gone, replaced with pure, unfiltered fear.
The mistress turned and walked out of the room and Liana slowly headed towards the door.
But before she walked out, our eyes met one more time and I mouthed.
“I hope you die pretty.”
I sat on my throne-like chair, the room covered in darkness as I waited.
My fingers drummed lazily against the armrest, my eyes fixed on the door. The beast inside me was already eager to tear into something.
I might be cold and ruthless, but what I can’t take is someone messing with what’s mine.
The image of Emilia lying lifeless in that bed burned in my head and it made me mad.
It doesn’t matter what type of voodoo brought her back but that woman shouldn’t have done that in the first place.
And I’m going to show her just what I do to people like her.
The smell of fear was thick in the air even before she stepped into the room.
It was disgusting and pathetic.
The doors pushed open and a slender figure walked in. Nothing like Emilia. Goddess, the thought of her made my pants tighten.
I’ve imagined how well she’d take me, not like these skinny little dolls that break with just one thrust.
The woman walked in, her steps slow and measured, like she was counting the time she had to live.
Good, she should have thought about that before touching Emilia.
“Your Majesty,” she said in a shaky voice as she tilted her head, not fully bowing like if she looked down I might pounce. For a moment, I said nothing, just let her stand there, giving her the illusion that she might survive tonight. “You know you’re a pretty little thing.” I said, voice cold as I watched her trembling form.
“But one thing about pretty little things is that they break easily.” She visibly swallowed as she took a step back in fear.
But there was nowhere for her to run to, she won’t be running anywhere, not today, not ever.
She hasn’t started screaming which was good, I wanted her to save all the screaming for when the real fun starts. “What’s your name?” I asked,
She shivered like I told her to plunge her heart and bring it to me. If that was possible.
“My name is Liliana…Liliana Ember” She said and I hummed, the sound of my fingers drumming on the armrest, echoing in the room.
Then slowly, I rose and she whimpered, taking a step back.
“Please…please, don’t kill me.” She said as she started crying.
If she thought that sound was going to soften my heart and make me not want to kill her, she was joking. First of all, I didn’t have a heart, secondly, the sound of her crying and pleading only made the beast inside me hungry.
“They told me you were strong,” I whispered as I took a step toward her and she took two steps back shaking her head. “Please don’t kill me, I’ll be your slave, I’ll do anything you want, please…” she cried harder and I stopped in my tracks. “You’ll do whatever I want?” I asked, giving her false hope and she nodded her head frantically.
