ROSE’S POV
My eyelids fluttered open, heavy and reluctant, like they’d been sealed shut for days.
The world came into focus slowly, too bright, too stark. White. Everything was white. The walls, the ceiling, even the faint light buzzing overhead-it all blended into this cold, sterile void that made my skin crawl. No windows, no warmth, just endless white that pressed in on me, making the room. feel smaller than it probably was.
My body still felt like dead weight, limp and unresponsive, strapped down to that same metal table. I could wiggle my toes a little now, feel the cool air on my skin, but that was it. No strength. No escape.
I blinked hard, trying to clear the fog in my head. My mouth was dry, my throat raw, like I’d swallowed sand. Where was I? How long had I been out? The memories crashed back-the voices, the injections, the burning pain. My wolf… she was still silent, buried deep inside me, but I could sense a faint stir, like a whisper in the dark. Not gone, just…trapped.
Footsteps echoed from somewhere down the hall, sharp and deliberate, getting closer. My heart picked up speed, thudding against my ribs.
I turned my head-just barely-to the side, straining to see. The door swung open with a soft whoosh, and there she was. The woman from before, the one with the floral perfume and the commanding voice.
She was tall, elegant in a white lab coat that matched the walls, her dark hair pulled back tight. Her
eyes were cold, calculating, like she was looking at a specimen under a microscope, not a person.
She stopped beside the table, her heels clicking one last time on the tiled floor.
“I see you’re awake,” she said, her voice smooth, almost pleasant. But there was an edge to it, a
sharpness that sent chills down my spine.
I stared at her, confusion swirling in my mind. Who was she? Why was she doing this? I opened my
mouth to ask, to demand answers-Why are you doing this? Let me go!-but nothing came out.
Not a sound.
My lips moved, but my voice was gone, stolen by whatever they’d pumped into me. Panic bubbled up, hot and frantic. I tried again, forcing air through my throat, but it was like my vocal cords had been cut. Silent. Helpless.
She tilted her head, studying me like I was a strange bug pinned under glass.
“Don’t bother trying to talk yet,” she said. “The paralytic is still working its way out of your system.
It’ll take a few more minutes.”

She straightened, clasped her hands behind her back, and began to pace slowly beside the bed.
“Humans,” she started, “have always been obsessed with finding a cure. Something fast. Something effective. Cancer. Rare diseases. Aging You name it-they’ve hunted for the magic pill.
She stopped, turned to face me fully, and smiled.
It wasn’t a nice smile.
“Everything we need…runs in your blood.”
My heart lurched. One hard, painful beat.
Her smile widened.
“You people thought you could hide it so well. Living among us. Pretending to be normal. But there
was just something about you, Rose. Something… different.”
She leaned closer.
“When my father mentioned your name to me, I couldn’t wait. I had to see for myself. And here we
are.”
She reached out and brushed a strand of hair from my forehead with cold fingers.
“Your blood is extraordinary. I’ve never seen anything like it. Regenerative properties off the charts.
Immune to every virus we’ve thrown at it. It heals. It rebuilds. It refuses to die.”
Her eyes glittered.
“I’m going to drain you dry.”
The words landed like a punch.
My breath caught. My pulse started racing, weak but frantic.
*
“And when I’m done with you…” she continued, voice dropping to a whisper, “…I’ll go for that handsome man you like so much.”
Damien.
No.
No. No. No.
Something inside me twisted-sharp and furious,
Not him.
They couldn’t touch him.

I wouldn’t let them.
My body started to shake.
The woman’s eyes widened.
“What-”
Alarms exploded.
Loud. Screeching. Red lights flashed across the white walls, turning everything bloody.
The lights flickered-on, off, on, off.
“What’s happening?” she snapped, spinning toward the door. “Stop her!”
Footsteps pounded. Men in black rushed in.
“Sedate her! Now!”
One of them lunged toward me, syringe already in hand.
My veins burned.
Hot. Boiling. Like lava had replaced my blood.
I felt her.
My wolf.
She wasn’t gone.
She’d been waiting. Hiding. Growing stronger in the dark while they thought they’d broken us.
A snarl ripped through my chest-low, animal, mine
The man was inches away, needle gleaming.
I moved.
One hard jerk.
The restraint on my right wrist snapped like cheap string.
His eyes went wide.
I snatched the syringe from his fingers, flipped it, and drove it straight into the side of his neck.
He choked, staggered back, clawing at his throat.
I didn’t wait.
My left hand clawed at the other strap. Fabric tore. Metal buckled.

The woman stumbled backward.
“Stop her! Somebody stop her!”
Too late.
I rolled off the bed, legs shaking, bare feet hitting freezing concrete.
The shift hit me like a storm.
Fur exploded across my skin. Bones cracked and reshaped. Pain flared bright and fast, then
vanished.
I landed on four paws.
A low, guttural growl vibrated in my throat.
Someone whispered, “Oh my God…”
I didn’t care.
Rage consumed me.
Pure. Blinding. Protective.
They
anted Damien.
They wanted to hurt my mate.
I lunged.
The first man didn’t even have time to scream. My jaws closed around his arm. Bone snapped. Blood sprayed hot across my muzzle.
He went down.
I spun.
Another one raised a gun.
I leaped.
My claws raked across his chest. He flew backward, slamming into the wall with a sickening crunch.
More came.
Three. Four.
I didn’t think.
I just tore.

Teeth. Claws. Fury.
Screams filled the room-high, panicked, desperate
One of them managed to stab another syringe into my flank.
I felt the sting.
I felt the burn.
But it didn’t matter.
Nothing mattered except keeping them away from him.
I shook the man off like a rag doll. The syringe snapped and fell.
Blood slicked the white floor. Red footprints. Red splatters on white walls.
I stood in the center of it all, chest heaving, fur matted dark with blood that wasn’t mine.
Silence crashed in.
Heavy. Sudden.
The alarms kept wailing, but the screams had stopped.
Bodies lay scattered.
Broken.
Still.
I staggered.
The shift reversed itself without my permission.
Fur receded. Bones shrank. I collapsed onto the cold floor, human again, naked, trembling.
Everything hurt.
Everything spun.
I dragged myself forward on shaking arms.
One of the men lay closest-face down, unmoving.
A phone peeked out of his back pocket.
My fingers shook so badly I almost dropped it when I pulled it free.
The screen was cracked.
I swiped.

No lock.
Thank God.
My brain felt slow, foggy, like it was underwater.
Damien’s number.
I had to remember.
I stared at the keypad.
One… three…
No.
Zero… nine…
My vision blurred. Tears? Blood? I didn’t know.
I typed anyway.
The numbers I knew by heart.
I pressed call.
It rang.
Once.
Twice.
Then his voice-deep, urgent, perfect.
“Hello?”
A sob tore out of me, weak and broken.
“Damien…” My voice cracked. Barely a whisper. “Da
The phone slipped from my numb fingers.
It clattered against the floor.
I tried to reach for it again.
My arm wouldn’t move.
The room tilted.
White walls. Red blood. White. Red.
Darkness crept in from the edges, soft this time.
