I dashed inside the ladies’ room when I caught Eli’s hand bleeding. The vanity mirror was broken and there were a couple of shards on the back of her hand. If my brother were to see this, he would definitely lose his mind. He would not even let a fly get to her. Now, she was wounded. I could almost imagine the hell he would raise upon the sight of his mate like this.

“I’m calling Creed and the doctor-”

“No. Come back here, Lizbeth. Close the door.”

Eli delivered the words softly and yet; I found myself obeying instinctively. My feet moved on their own. She didn’t have a beast, but her authority as the dragon princess cannot be questioned. She winced as she pulled out the glass shards one by

one.

“Do you need help?” I asked hesitantly. If she did, would she… want my help?

“Yes please,” she replied, looking relieved.

“What happened?” I inquired as I tried to pull the shard as gently as possible. She bit her lower lip to stop herself from making a sound.

“Someone forgot his manners and left a love letter there again.”

She glanced at the mirror and took a deep breath. By the looks of it, whatever was in the mirror was the opposite. Only someone like her would call a threat like that a love letter.

The fierceness in Eli’s eyes was not present tonight. There was just… pure, raw sadness there that I knew was affecting my brother too. He kept glancing at her inside the dining hall.

“I didn’t get to give you anything when I attended your wedding. I didn’t have the time to go shopping.”

I shook my head, my face flushing. “It’s alright. You didn’t have to. Your presence there was already a big blessing for me and Dale.”

Why did I feel so embarrassed in front of my brother’s mate? I rarely feel such emotion. But when I looked at Eli, I felt a tug in my heart like I wanted to hug her and beg for her forgiveness at the same time. It was only my second time seeing her and yet, I felt like I’d been missing her for a while now.

“I won’t accept no for an answer tonight, Lizbeth. Take this.”

I was stunned when she handed me a golden dagger.

“I originally had it made for me. It’s laced with my blood and the mana of a dragon. When the time comes, never hesitate to use it, Lizbeth. It will protect you and the people you love.”

My initial response was to refuse. The dagger seemed too special for me to have. Not to mention that it looked pretty ominous for a wedding gift. Who would think of giving sharp objects to a married couple?

Only this woman.

But when I saw the look in her eyes, I found myself clutching the dagger and saying, “Thank you very much, Eli. I will

treasure this.”

She nodded and was quiet until I finished taking out the last shard. Only then did her palm start healing. She stared at her

hands for a long time and just when I thought she would not speak to me anymore, she asked, “Can I ask you a favor?”

“Anything.” I replied too quickly.

She met my eyes and smiled although it did not reach her eyes. “I have a sister.”

I frowned. “You do?”

But I thought she was an only daughter? Or was that thing supposed to be a secret?

Eli nodded. “We only found each other recently. When I met her, she’s deeply in love with her husband. I didn’t have the heart to tell her that I know the guy and that he’s not worthy of her. He’s only ever going to hurt her. Besides, if I said anything, would she have believed me? I’m still practically a stranger to her.”

Reasonable enough. “Should I speak to her? I can have the pack investigate her husband and hand her the result.”

She shook her head. “No need, but she will appear later. You’ll know it when she does. You’ll feel it in your bones when you see her: she’s my sister. When she comes crying later and I can’t be there for her, will you please tell her something for me?”

“Of course.”

To my surprise, Eli closed the gap between us and wrapped me in her embrace so tenderly it made my eyes water. “Please hug her like this for me.” And then she patted my back and hummed softly for me. “Tell her that she’s one hell of a brave woman. She’ll know what to do. Please remind her that the pain, the brokenness, the agony, the nightmare, they are only a phase, a page in her beautiful book and not her entire life story. There are still so many pages out there, waiting for her to open. Also, tell her that there is nothing wrong with her. She is beautiful, just a little crazy, and she may act without thinking at times, but that’s what makes her real, that’s what makes her amazing.”

Her shoulders shook violently. “Eli? Why are you-”

“No, please listen. I might not have the energy to tell her these things later.” Eli held me tighter. “Tell her that she’s one brave bitch just like her sister. She’s going to come out of this bruised but strong. She’s a warrior. And she’s loved. Maybe not by her man but by everyone around her. Remind her to wipe those tears and look around so she could clearly see who those people are. Lastly…”

Eli groaned as if she was in pain and was only forcing herself to keep talking. She caressed her belly. When she spoke, her voice was lower. “Please tell her that I may not be able to protect her like her brother, but she can come to me when she’s weary

and I’ll hold her like this. It’s going to hurt like a bitch. But she got this. Why? Because she’s a badass. Just like her siblings.” She breathed deeply and cupped my face with tears in her eyes. “Do you remember all that?”

“I do.”

I was only supposed to be the messenger here so why was I this affected?

“Good.” She wiped her tears and smiled. “Please keep remembering that. Thank you, Lizbeth. Thank you… sis.”

Eli was already gone but her last three words left me standing still. What was that supposed to mean?

Present Time

Eli didn’t make me spend days wondering what she meant. I stood frozen as I watched the man that I love and vowed to cherish for the rest of my life stepped onto my brother who was on the floor from all the wounds he acquired from the invaders surrounding us. It was like looking at a stranger with half his handsome face marred by darkness.

“Dale… why?”

The words barely left my mouth. His gaze finally landed on me. He held me by the shoulders and smiled like he used to. But tonight, I could no longer feel his warmth.
