I was sure I dislocated my shoulder with how strong the alpha smacked me there while I was enjoying my first proper meal in four years. The dining hall was my one and only destination after the unexpected meeting with McAllister.

I didn’t wince. Alphas didn’t do that. Terror was the sweetest perfume for these grade A assholes, and I wasn’t going to give them the satisfaction. I held it in and calmly looked up to meet the eyes of the alphahole who invited himself in and casually sat in front of me as if we were long-time friends.

He had piercings everywhere. A few on his left ear, two on his lower lip, and another two on his brow. He had a tattoo on his neck, around his wrist, and his hair was dyed crimson. Every bit of him screamed ‘rebel. Only the two of us were wearing shirts and jeans. Mine was faded, his was tattered. The rest looked like they were attending a semi-formal event.

“You look fine. In fact, you look healthy,” he observed, surprised.

I only remembered to reply after I gobbled the steak on my plate. “My good health seems to upset you.”

He shrugged. “Didn’t you know? A summon from the alpha prince means somebody royally fucked up. And he summoned you. Some expected you’d come out of the office in a body bag. I took a risk and bet you’ll live and suffer only a few broken bones. I’m three hundred bucks richer thanks to you.”

He looked like he was waiting for me to respond and so I forced the words out of my mouth. “You’re welcome, I guess?”

He winked playfully. “I knew you’d make it out alive after that public display you put on this morning.”

“Public display?”

“Hell, yeah! You were famous for being the only student who stepped foot into this academy with fresh blood on your shirt on your first day. I’m in my second year here and I’d never seen anyone pull that thing off.” He chuckled. “Even I wouldn’t go that far. My dad would roast me alive.”

I just shrugged as I targeted my burgers.

“You got two of ’em? Your portion is bigger too.” He whistled. “Damn, pretty boy! You’re really using your face card to the fullest, huh?”

So that’s why there were a few complaints behind me earlier. I thought it was another nonsense by the alphas. When they opened their mouths, it was often pure trash, so I didn’t bother to listen. I didn’t know it was about my extra burger. I only greeted the old, adorable lady server, smiled at her, and told her the food looked and smelled amazing.

It wasn’t about the face card. It was simply about manners although I didn’t dare correct the meddler in front of me. He was a man, an alpha. What did alphas know about manners?

Even Shitty who was also having his meal with his friends and was sitting a couple of tables away from me was currently shooting daggers at me and then at the chatterbox on my table as if both of us had offended him by simply existing. Shitty was as famous as I heard. Alphas gathered around him, some were clearly just there to kiss his royal ass.

The next person I thought about was Laurent. At least, the mystery was solved. I now knew why he hated me to the core. I ignored my howling wolf at the rejection. As much as I didn’t want to care, the professor was proving to be the biggest threat in this Academy.

In the end, I was right. There was only one decent man in all the realms. And he passed away. Maybe that was why their moon goddess took dad away. He was too damn good for this world.

“Anyway, aren’t you going to ask me about my name? My pack?”

I blinked twice. I didn’t realize this chatterbox was still with me.

I shook my head, hoping the cold response would push him away and make him leave me alone. I wanted to eat in peace. But instead of being dejected, his grin only grew wider. For some reason, he appeared more interested.

He extended his hand. “I’m Nero Avenida from the Northwind pack.”

Nero looked like he was waiting for my reaction about his pack. And when I didn’t have any, even his eyes smiled when he smiled. He didn’t even look offended as he put his hand down. “You don’t give a damn, do you? I have a feeling we’re going to be good friends, Ari.”

I certainly didn’t share the same feeling. When was this alpha going to leave? I glanced at his tray with absolute longing. When was he going to stop talking and start eating? Poor steak. It was getting cold.

His eyes sparkled. “Do you want my share?”

It wasn’t poisoned. My mana could detect it if it ever was. “Are you ever going to eat that?”

“It depends. You can have it if you answer my question.”

That was easy. “Fire away.”

“Which pack did you come from?”

“Gray.”

“Gray pack?” Chatterbox frowned as he pushed his tray to my direction. “I haven’t heard of that.”

Me either. I only invented it today.

“Where is that?”

“Far, far away,” I answered as I quickly gulped down his steak, the tastiest and juiciest I’d had in my entire life. It just kept getting better with each bite. Who knew the enemy’s den had a paradise in the form of their dining hall? This was going to be my favorite place.

“You’re too short. Too lean. Did you really become the alpha of your pack?” I just nodded. “How come? What happened to your former alpha?”

“Dead.”

“How?” Nero asked as he sipped on his drink.

“Parvo.”

He coughed. Water dripped down his mouth as he stared at me wide-eyed. “What the heck did you think of him? A dog?”

I thought of Grigor and shrugged. “He barked too much when he was alive.”

How I wished it was true, that Grigor would do me a favor and just drop dead. Right now, unfortunately, I could only kill him in my stories.

Nero’s jaw dropped. He stared at me for exactly three seconds and then he laughed out loud. We were already gaining attention because as it happened, two of the alphas who had such colorful hairs sat together at one table. And now he was like this. His eyes watered as he smacked the table while his other hand was on his stomach as his face turned red from laughing like a madman.

I already emptied his tray. There was no more reason for me to stay.

I stood and looked around. Just as I thought. Every attention was on us. But I didn’t want to regret sharing the table with him. My stomach was full for the first time, thanks to chatterbox.

There were a few professors who walked into the dining hall, including Laurent who didn’t glance my way unlike the ones with him. The students greeted them; some even bowed their heads.

I walked past them. Chatterbox was beside me in an instant. “You didn’t bow to the profs.”

“I have a stiff neck. So, are they members of the council?” I asked without looking at him.

“No.”

“Royalties then?”

“Also no.”

“Then why do you think I’d bow to them?”

“Many of the new students do that. You know, to suck up to the higher ups.”

“Did you do that too?”

Nero was quiet for once. When I glanced at him, his face was as red as his hair. So, he did bow huh. What an idiot. “Well, Shitty didn’t bow too. He was in the orientation earlier so he was in his first year as well.”

“Shitty?”
