Chapter 22
Chapter 22
(Creed)
The people in this realm knew never to run in front of the true-blue predators. Bridget may be young, but that did not mean she was harmless. Her wolf was bigger than many children her age. It was how everyone recognized her. One look at her and people already knew what pack she belonged to.
That’s why when Vicious ran, it triggered the beast inside the kid. Her eye color changed as she shifted and chased after her. Lizbeth and the girls screamed as we followed the wolf to the shore. When we got there, Vicious was lying on the sand and the wolf was on top of her. Lizbeth was about to get in between them when I stopped her.
“Let me.”
Young wolves were uncontrolled and easily triggered. If we were to suddenly interrupt and it shocked Bridget, she could attack my mate. Quietly, I approached the two. I was two steps away when Vicious surprised me again by caressing Bridget’s fur.
“You are so cute!” she mused, looking surprisingly fascinated. The latter then stared at her before licking her face, making her giggle.
Bridget released Vicious only to run after her again. The two played across the shore, the wolf’s tail would wag each time she would giggle. The wolf didn’t show any sign of aggressiveness towards the person she had only met today. It was the exact opposite to what happened during her lessons when she attacked her trainer.
“How did she do that? I had to give Bridget treats every single day for months just so she could warm up to me,” Dale exclaimed. “What’s her trick?”
“Nothing.” Silver shook her head, fighting back her smile. “It’s just Eli… being Eli.”
Dale passed by me as he played photographer, capturing the moment, capturing the little wolf’s first play outside.
“Eli keeps reminding me every moment why I’ve come to like her in the shortest span of time,” Lizbeth asked, still looking awed, as she watched Vicious with her daughter. “I watched the humans’ videos of her from the internet when she attended social events with her husband. Her smiles there looked strained. They didn’t reach her eyes. Her laugh was forced. She wasn’t being true there. Here, I don’t think she’s aware, but she’s being real, the realest she could be. Doesn’t Eli just remind you how to be young and carefree again? Doesn’t she remind you of the good parts about life?”
Vicious fell on the sand again when the little beast tackled her, she was laughing so much her face down to her neck had turned red, when Bridget licked the side of her neck, her weak spot.
“All humans who approached the shifters in the past also acted like saints, Lizbeth,” I reminded them. “They wanted. something from us, that’s why they were in their best behavior.”
“Yes, but Eli’s no saint, brother.” Lizbeth laughed. “Come on. She doesn’t even behave. She has these insane and murderous thoughts at times. Goodness, she bites when triggered. I even heard her curse you last night. She’s unlike the female humans and shifters who approached you before. So, give her a chance and don’t get married to anyone just yet. I’m sure His Majesty will understand once he gets to know her better.”
Easy for her to say.
Lizbeth was not the one who witnessed our father die at the hands of those humans. Not to mention that the kingdom had been through it before. Prince Rio had once fallen in love with a woman he claimed to have a beautiful soul. Where did that leave him? Six feet below the ground.
The feeling was mutual when it came to Vicious and I. Both of us had certain people and things we were protecting. We found pleasure in getting a rise out of each other, especially in discovering each other’s bodies. At the same time, we were aware that we were two ticking bombs that’s why we had to have limits.
Otherwise, it would be risky for us.
“What’s your relationship with her?” Lizbeth probed.
I shrugged. Perhaps, it was safe to say that Vicious and I were enemies… with some very delicious benefits.
I could not resist touching her. Holding her. Craving her. I could not stop the smile that curved my lips each time she thought she could trick me.
I could not stop obsessing over her every reaction which made me doubt whether humans had become more advanced in the past years. My pack must have missed it during our investigation. Did they perhaps learn how to put a spell on people? “Eli seems bitter when it comes to men and relationships. I don’t think she’s the type to fall in love easily. You heard her yourself. She said all men are assholes,” Shanty said and winked when they failed to get a response from me. I was sure

that they were gathering information. Whatever I tell them this morning will reach Vicious’ ears when evening comes. “So, it looks like you have to work harder, alpha.”
“Vicious could be bitter all her life. I don’t give a damn.”
Lizbeth raised her brow. “Then why did you bring her here? Even if Eli is your mate, she is a human, you couldn’t mark each other anyway.”
She did not have to know the reason.
“Before I forget, what kind of pass did you register for Eli?”
All creatures outside our realm were required to register for a pass before they could enter our borders. And because Vicious knew nothing about our policy, I did the registration for her. There were two kinds of passes for outsiders. Temporary for guests who would be visiting for a few days or weeks. Vacation passes if they were with us and would be staying for an indefinite period of time. There was a third pass although not many knew about it. It was the most difficult to obtain.
“Creed? The girls and I still want to hang out with her. Tell me.”
I just smirked and patted my sister’s shoulder. “Tell your new friend to meet me in my office in thirty minutes.”
(Eli)
“I know you are there, Vicious. Come in.”
Remembering how Creed’s wolf growl at me in the kitchen made me hesitate. But if I stayed out here longer, I might hear it again. It was not like I could hide from this man. I’d just worn myself out. Slowly, I pushed the door open and caught him standing beside the glass wall with his back on mine and a cigarette in hand.
“I didn’t know that Bridget was there, I swear. I’ll make sure no kid is around next time I try to express myself,” I said defensively. “I’m sorry both of you had to hear that. In all fairness, she thought ‘asshole’ means cool although let’s face it, Black. After last night, you are really a grade A asshole.”
Creed remained staring at the beach. I had no way of knowing how he reacted.
“The Alpha King and Her Highness want you to attend the foundation party in their castle, Vicious. It’ll be held the day after tomorrow,” he said instead. “You are coming with me.”
And what? Allow myself to be exposed in front of hundreds of predators? I’d seen how they reacted when I first arrived, how they came close to smashing the car windows to get to me. Even if Creed wasn’t asking, even if he was commanding me, I still had to voice out my feelings.
“I don’t think I can do that.”
“I will pay you.”
“What makes you think I will agree just because-”
ور –
“You have no choice, Vicious,” Creed said as he finally turned to face me.
I tried to ignore how dashing he looked in his suit although I couldn’t help being distracted when what happened last night popped into my head, making me remember how glorious it felt when his hands were on my body.
“Whether you like it or not, you are coming with me. I would give you a hundred thousand dollars for every hour that you will behave in front of the king.”
My jaw dropped. With that money, I could start somewhere else with mom. Without Landon in the picture anymore, I could finally build something for me and her.
“You really mean that? You don’t mind wasting your money like that?”
Creed frowned. “I would rather waste money than see you get yourself killed by the King’s men all because you could not behave, Vicious. If you say yes, my assistant will create a bank account under your name and transfer fifty thousand dollars today. You will get the rest after the party.”
“You should have started with that, Black,” I said with the brightest smile on my face and didn’t question him anymore. I knew I told him not all humans could be bought but I was a changed woman now. Screw pride. It wouldn’t save me and mom. I may have to risk my life for one whole night but it’ll be worth it. I sat in front of his desk to learn more details. “So, when is the party again?”
