Chapter 24
Chapter 24
(Eli)
It was like a fairytale. The mountains served as the castle’s backdrop. I couldn’t see the view properly because it was dark, but it looked ethereal. I’d watched the news about the upcoming foundation party. That’s why I somehow knew what the castle looked like during the daytime. And I was right. It was a vision that would inspire the artists.
Lizbeth said that all the nobles would be here tonight. The girls were also somewhere around here. They promised they would find me at the party. Knowing I’d be seeing them soon boosted my wavering confidence.
Landon may have trained me to get used to parties but me and everyone here were a world apart. They had something else other than their flashy gowns and suits. Their wolves. And I didn’t know how but it was like I could feel their beasts watching my every move. Luckily, none of them were growling like the first time, one of the perks of being under the protection of Creed Black whom people respected and feared at the same time.
At five foot and ten inches, I didn’t have to look up when meeting people. Here, everyone looked down on me literally because they towered over me despite my four-inch heels.
I took a deep breath as we stepped inside the castle. Everything was so extravagant and a work of art from the solid stone architecture, pointed arches that were all arranged in perfect symmetry, the thick columns, and the paintings that took my breath away. For the past hour, Creed would stop every now and then to introduce me to the lords of the council and their wives who politely offered their hands.
“The VIP,” one of them even said, his brow rising. “And the savior.”
There was mockery in his voice which I ignored. I pretended not to detect it as I smiled innocently. At this rate, I could ignore everything with my precious gold bars on the line.
“How does it feel that the royal family owes you one now?” another lord asked and scoffed. I didn’t bother remembering the names. I wouldn’t be here for long anyway. But I called him the Grinch in my head for being grumpy. “Imagine that? The royal family being indebted to a mere human.”
“If you didn’t like that, then you should have been there to save the princess instead,” Creed answered for me as he casually sipped on his wine.
“Humans are manipulators,” Grinch answered. “How are we supposed to know that your human companion didn’t plan all that? How can you prove she didn’t manipulate the princess into jumping at the bridge? They refused to show us the footage from that day. It was strange how the human was there at the perfect place and time. It all seemed like a whole show to me just to leech off the princess.”
His wife, whom I called Glitters in my mind based on the excessive number of sparkles in her gown and body, nodded, as she fanned herself.
“I agree. Who would benefit from it the most anyway? It’ll be that despicable human. Since she is alone in our realm, she needed a backup. That was a brilliant plan, Ellen. You chose the most vulnerable person as a target. And also, one of the most influential here.”
I bit my lower lip to stop myself from speaking, from defending myself in honor of my agreement with Creed. I wasn’t aware I was gripping his arm tightly until he handed his empty glass to Grinch who looked baffled but accepted the glass anyway. He then stole Grinch’s pocket square and used it to wipe his mouth before tossing the fabric back at him.
Creed glanced at me and then laughed. “Do you think my mate is capable of ordering a princess to jump at the river? And not just any river, but the Romualdez River? I am flattered that you think highly of my mate, my lord, that you think she was so strong that despite her body constitution, she risked her life all for the show you were talking about. However, in doing so, you just belittled the princess’ ability to think for herself.”
“T-that is not what I meant, my lord. Elena-”
“I am not finished talking.”
Everyone around us fell silent. Even I was terrified. Creed wasn’t even raising his voice, and he didn’t have to. His expression and calm voice were more than enough to bring terror to anyone he stared at.
“Her Highness was generous enough that she did not want anyone to be punished that day,” Creed added in an icy tone that sent chills to my system. “Because of that, the person involved could still play around never knowing that he endangered a royal blood. If the footage was released like you wanted, then your pack, especially your grandson, would not have survived His Majesty’s wrath.”
“What are you talking about?” the couple asked,

the river, Gregor. Emmanuelle wanted to spare you all that’s why you and your wife were still invited to this party but then I had to hear that garbage straight from your mouth,” the King who came out of nowhere, spoke. “None of you know the whole story. My granddaughter and the human did not deserve to hear that from both of you. Get out.”
The King, Aramides Beckett, was the only man wearing a red tuxedo in the hall. He had a royal chain draped over his shoulder, a signet ring, and a brooch that showed a wolf on top of a crescent moon. His hair may be all gray but that was the only indication of his age. Carmie said the king had ruled for almost three centuries and yet, he looked like he was only in his late fifties.
He stood straight, his sharp dark chocolate eyes made Grinch and Glitters cower. They both kneeled on their knees while the rest of the guests lowered their heads which I copied.
“Greetings to Your Majesty, the magnificent son of the moon, blessed by the gods and goddesses,” they all greeted.
“At ease,” he commanded in a voice laced with unquestionable authority.
“Thank you, your majesty.”
With a slight raise of his hand, two soldiers arrived. “Get these chatty bugs out of here. They are not needed in my territory.”
Glitters sobbed while Grinch begged for forgiveness. They were unheard as they were forcefully escorted out of the hall when the alpha beside me suddenly called them.
“Lord Gregor.” Creed’s voice boomed in the hall. He glanced at Grinch and the other guests around us, sending a message or was it a warning with his eyes? “For the second time, my mate’s name is not Ellen or Elena. She is Elianna Dawson. I will only forgive you and anyone here once for getting it wrong. Do it again and I will think of that as a sign that your miniscule brain is incapable of processing very simple information.”
My mouth fell open in shock.
And I wasn’t the only one.
The guests, even the King looked stunned, his lips parted ever so slightly.
I knew that Creed was an asshole, but like his sister said, he had limits. I didn’t think he would willingly become an asshole.
For my sake.
A smile curved my lips. Tonight, Creed wasn’t just my enemy. He wasn’t just my alpha or my mate.
Tonight, he was an asshole.
But he was my asshole.
