Chapter 48
Chapter 48
(END)
“Sweetheart.”
It had been years since I last heard that voice, but I hadn’t forgotten it. It was engrained in my head. In my memory. That’s why I knew I couldn’t be mistaken. There was only one person in the world who would call me that way with so much softness and emotion in her voice.
The fork slid down from my shaking hand. The food was forgotten in an instant as I gripped my phone. I looked up to stop my tears from falling in the middle of the bustling café.
“Mom,” I whispered with all the love and agony in my heart. “Is that really you?”
“What happened to staying low key, sweetheart?”
I laughed and cried at the same time. It was really her. That usual worry in her voice can’t be faked. She tended to worry a lot, especially about being seen in public. That’s why she would often hide her face through her ridiculous big eyeglasses. her hideous hat, and thick scarf. She would also dye her hair dark as much as possible although after a long time of being in a coma, her original blonde hair had now become prominent.
When I was starting to gather attention from the other customers, I went to the ladies’ room and locked myself inside a cubicle.
“I’m so sorry, mom. I only did that because I was desperate. I’ll explain when I see you. Where are you? How did you find my number? When did you wake up?”
“I stole the nurse’s phone before I escaped the hospital. It’s a lot to explain right now, Eli. I’ll tell you everything you need to know when we see each other.”
“And when is that?” I asked, my voice cracking. “You don’t even know where I am, mom. You won’t believe this place exists.”
How do I tell her the truth? Where do I begin?
“Hush, sweetheart. I know where you are. The wolves have you but not for long. I will find you there myself. Do you still
trust mom?”
I nodded even if she couldn’t see me right now. “Always, mom. I miss you so much. How are you? Are you okay? Are you safe? Are you with Percy and Easton? Why did you even escape? You are the safest in the hospital, mom.”
I had so many questions. How did she find out about the wolves? But I could wait until she told me. I waited for years to hear her voice again. Now that she was awake, I wouldn’t mind waiting for a few weeks more.
“I’m okay but I’m not safe anywhere. You and I are not safe anywhere, Eli. That’s why when I find the chance, I will get you out of there. I promise you that. The bracelet I gave you, is it still intact?”
Guilt stabbed my heart. “Not anymore, mom. I’m sorry.”
I heard her take a deep breath. “It’s okay, sweetheart. I’ll check if i can find the person who crafted that and have her make
another one.”
“Okay. I’ll wait for you, mom. I miss you. You have no idea how much.”
Her promises were the only ones I will believe in. The relief, the tension, and the longing made me sob harder.
I heard her cry on the other line and it crushed my heart. Hearing my only parent cry had never been easy for me.

Chapter 48
“It must have been so hard for you, sweetheart. It took me a long time to wake up. I wasn’t able to protect you better. I’m so sorry. I failed you.”
“No, you didn’t. Don’t ever say that. You’re talking to me again, mom. Everything’s okay now that you’re back. Now that you’ve opened your eyes.”
“I love you so, sweetheart.”
“Love you, mom.”
“Don’t tell anyone about me, okay? Don’t contact this number again. Don’t trust the wolves. The only person you can trust the most is yourself, Eli. Remember that. I will call you. And sweetheart?”
“Yes, mom?” I croaked.
“Thank you for not giving up on me.”
In my head, I could picture her smiling. Today, despite the confusion she was certainly facing, despite the overwhelming changes around her, and the weight I overheard in her voice, I knew her eyes lit up.
Somehow, she seemed to know what I did and whom I did it for.
And that made all the sacrifices worth it.
The call ended before I could answer. I leaned against the door of the cubicle and put the phone close to my heart. I stayed there for five more minutes before getting out or else the guards would worry. They were outside the café today and didn’t come with me as if they didn’t want to risk eating with me again. I didn’t force them anymore since their alpha boss had to remind me not to terrorize the guards otherwise, they wouldn’t agree to guard me next time. And without guards, I wouldn’t be able to roam around.
I’d always had a big appetite, but it had gotten worse since living here. It was like there was a living monster inside me who needed all that food and energy.
I was about to return to my table when I heard conversations that I would normally not listen to. The thing I hated the most was gossiping. But they just had to mention Creed. I stopped at the corridor and glanced at the particular table which had four men sitting around it. They were covered by dark smoke.
“No wonder lord Creed’s been eager to go back home these days. With a woman like that waiting in his bed, anyone would hurry back. How about a little taste before we send her to the master?” the man in a gray bonnet asked while licking his upper lip.
This café was a hit. Almost all the tables were occupied and there were more customers lining up at the counters. With their superb hearing, how come none of them seemed to hear the guys? I heard they were all loyal to Creed and his pack. Whatever happened to that?
“Why not? We were only told to deliver the human. They didn’t tell us we couldn’t have fun. We could enjoy her and make her alpha suffer at the same time. It’ll be like hitting two birds with one stone,” another guy in braces said while sipping on his tea, the smoke around their table was getting darker and no one seemed to notice.
It was the same with the dot I saw on Silver’s mate. Why was I the only one noticing these things? Strange things kept happening to my senses since coming here.
“Do you think that arrogant alpha will come for her?”
“They’re mates. Of course, he will. After this, they will finally know who they messed with. I can’t wait to see those high- ranking assholes fall down their thrones. The men texted. Their positions have been confirmed. There’s another guard at the backdoor. I’ll take care of him.”
While they were assigning roles, I stepped backwards and dialed Creed’s number only to freeze when my back hit against

something.
No, not something. Someone. Before I could scream, he had already covered my mouth with his big hand.
