Maxine/Fixer POV
It was like I was listening to someone else’s life, as Prez and Tank talked about my life changes and what I wanted to do. I had always dreamed of helping the street kids; if ever I had a chance, give them areas to play, something more challenging than the usual swings and slides. Like flying foxes, and rock climbing, part of why I want to fix up the water hole, and make some jetty’s and a water slide, maybe some proper rope swings.
At dinner, I was bursting to tell Jenny what was going on; we don’t have secrets, and I want to share my wealth with her, as much as she will let me, to get her away from her folks completely. Time called by Prez, and we walked to his office, the members watching us go, including Cricket and Bruiser, who had not been included in this chat. Maybe later. For now, it was our Prez and my BFF who would be included.
Tank led me to the lounge chair and pulled me onto his lap. By now, I am expecting nothing less. I like his lap as my chair. Or maybe it’s the cuddle I get and the nuzzling. I giggle as I sit, his beard tickling my neck as he places a kiss on my shoulder.
“Fixer, would you like to explain?” Prez asked, and all heads turned to stare at me, with frowns and surprised looks on their faces.
“Jenny, remember when I told you about the will from Grandpa, and how Tandy said after my parents had left, that I would know more when I get older?”
“Sure, we fantasized over what he could mean for months.” She giggled. We had, pretending I was born of royalty, and the world at my feet.
“Today I found out what that meant. I am not yet ready to tell everyone, but I own next door.”
Jenny squealed like a banshee, got up, and did a happy dance before Blaze pulled her down and onto his lap.
“What does that mean, you own it?” Sticks asked the most stupid questions at times.
“Her Grandmothers family owned it, and her grandmother hid it from everyone. It was to go to my mother, but she died, so Grandma willed it to me, and some money for upkeep, because my aunt proved to be a bi.tch.” I started, but Jenny interrupted me.
“Back up, your mother? Why didn’t she get it when Grandma died?” Jenny asked, trying to piece it together.
“Because the person we all believed to be her mother wasn’t her mother but her aunt, and Grandma refused to give it to that greedy woman,” Tank answered for me.
“Now you’d better start explaining from the beginning.” Sticks pushed, not being privy to much of my life, and Tank filled the room in, with most of what we had found out so far.
“Is Tandy going to get them arrested? Like that one big lie.” Jenny asked, having climbed off Blaze’s lap and was almost on Tank’s as she held onto me, trying to give me comfort.
“Yep, he said he will grab all the evidence, and charge them, including the medical records, and charge the daughter too, because since she turned eighteen, she can be charged as an adult, and I have had a few times where I have gone to the hospital for a check up, and had said an altication with sister on the records. I hadn’t charged them before, because I didn’t think I could charge family, but Tandy is going to fix all that. He promised to go right back to when my real mother died, and Grandma gained custody. He said something was fishy about how all that came about, and he has hired an investigator to look into it.’
“You said your mother died, who’s your dad, don’t tell me that piece of shiet.” Jenny spat out.
“Nope, my dad, he’s MIA, in military and his team went missing, he knows about me, got regualar updates, but being the kind of life he has, he couldn’t take on a child, so he left me with Grandma, he was angry when he learned about my mistreatment, but could do little about it, he was deployed for too long at a time, his way of coping with the loss of Mother, by the time he came back, and talked to Tandy, because Grandpa died, he didn’t know what to do, he couldn’t give up his job, he had five years left to do on the contract he had signed. It would have been over last year, and could come for me, but he went MIA before anything could be organised, and he wasn’t sure how to handle, suddenly turning up in my life, and announcing he was my dad.” I understood, the longer it was left, the harder it became, and it would look like he never cared.
“That’s so sad.” Jenny had tears in her eyes, no doubt thinking of how different my life could have been.
“Cheer up, things are getting better now. So, are you coming to live with me? I am moving in tomorrow.” I said, looking at Jenny’s red eyes, and then to Sticks’ worried face.
“Coffee?” Jenny offered and guided me to the kitchen, Tank following behind, Sticks leaving us to it, and headed upstairs to start packing. I didn’t have much to pack; never been one for a huge wardrobe.
“Want to talk here or in your room?” I looked at Tank as he started to gather snacks.
“Our room.” Blaze, assisted Tank, and while the girls took the coffees, the boys brought up
the snacks, and entered our room.
I placed the coffees on the table, and the guys unloaded the food.
“Alright, spit it out.” I looked at Tank and nodded to Blaze.
“He’s cool.” I nodded, and started to unload on Jenny, she asked questions, and I answered them the best I could, all the while the guys stayed quiet and listened, sometimes sucking in air in shock at what they heard, they might have had some questions on the tip of their tongues, but held them in, as Jenny, and I skipped through my childhood, and repercussions, I had talked to Tandy about, and what my new grandparents want to do, they according to Tandy, have a lot to make up for, and making sure my aunt, uncle, and cousin are dealt with, was the start.
“You mean if they manage to stay out of jail, they would be safer in jail?” Jenny asked as I ran out of things to discuss.
“Yeah, Tandy sent me a message that my Gramps will ensure that they are dealt with. It might not happen immediately, but eventually every broken bone and bruise I ever received will get tenfold, or words to that effect.” I giggled at the thought of my cousin being bruised and broken, like I had been, by her.
