Storm POV
‘No, no, quicker. Move, shift your legs, quickly, NOO 0000.
Sweating and running, getting nowhere close to the truck, it was like I was running on the spot, needing to get closer to the truck. I was having another version of the accident, have been having them all night, each with a different scenario. Sometimes I make it on time to save her from being hurt, other times I don’t make it on time, and she dies. Each time is nothing like what really happened, and my mind was playing tricks on me.
Tried to sit up, but was entwined in my bedding, and struggled to get out of it. I was covered in sweat and felt like I hadn’t slept at all. Got out of bed, hit the bathroom, did my morning routine, and headed downstairs, in jeans, shirt, boots, and cut. That will have to do. Mum said we have to be at the hospital by seven, and the judge will meet us there.
It’s too early, but I can’t go back to sleep, and see another version of the accident.
Mum and Dad were already in the kitchen when I arrived, deep in a passionate embrace, lip-locked. Dad had said you’ve got to take the opportunity of enjoying his wife when the moment arrives, and that was what was happening in the kitchen right now. It still shocks me to catch them at it, but at the same time, it makes me feel good inside to know my parents are still at it at their age. I hope that when I get married, I will still be deeply in love with my wife. They are a shining example of true love, and I hope they never lose that spontaneity, as Dad puts it.
“Morning, you up early?” I say as I enter the kitchen, as toast pops up, wondering why they get up so early.
“Morning, happy birthday, make toast and a travel mug of coffee to go, we got to get going, word is that Cloe’s father was up, and ranting about his missing daughter and was looking for a ride to the hospital, His truck stuck where it was for now,” Dad says. As Mum comes over and gives me a hug.
“Not the way you envisaged your birthday, we have a gift, but we will leave that till later.” Mum kisses my cheek, turns and picks up her toast and coffee, and heads out the door, Dad not far behind her.
Soon, I am in the back of Dad’s truck, heading to the hospital faster than the speed limit. I finish off my toast, or what I managed to grab, and drink the last of my coffee, wishing I had more of both. We get to park close, as not many cars are about at this time of day.”
The hospital was quiet, and even the waiting room was almost empty.
“Morning, Patrick.” Dad greets the Judge, who was waiting at the lifts, along with his aide and two security guards.
“Morning, Tank, Fixer, and Storm. Happy Birthday. Hope the day gets better as it moves along. You
did an amazing job, saving that girl’s life. Well done might suggest a merit award or something.
Will think about it.”
“Thanks, Judge. I did what anyone would have done.”
“Um, no, not everyone would, many would be frozen in shock, too stunned to move, till it was too
late. I have seen the footage, take it from me, that was good reactions.” He wouldn’t let me sweep the compliment under the proverbial carpet, so to speak.
“Patrick, word is the father was on his way, not sure if we beat him here or not,” Dad said as we entered the lift and Dad punched the floor number.
“We shall see. Let’s hope we have.”
The lift doors opened, and shouting and abuse were heard. We all jogged down the hallway. Th father beat us to it and was arguing with the father to allow him in the room. Our guards were stopping him and his daughter, who looked like she was wearing a dress, two or three sizes too small for her; there was nothing left to the imagination. I am sure if that were Penny, Dad would have had her change into something that fit.
“What’s going on here?” the Judge calls out as we get closer. The nurses looked relieved to see him and stepped back. The doctors stood to one side, letting the guards do their jobs but ready to jump in if needed.
