Chapter 351

Sprocket POV

Wow, my girl let Nightingale have two full barrel loads, right where it hurts, not holding back. I was proud of her for standing up for herself. What I didn’t expect was her running; it must have been very emotional for her, and she didn’t want to be seen crying at the table.

Skittles was fast, too fast. I almost didn’t make it to her in time when she tripped. I was about to grab her arm to stop her from running, and ended up saving her from face–planting the ground. She hugged me tight, shaking, crying. Stinger joined us, hugging us both, as we let Skittles cry till

she had no tears left to cry.

Slowly, we pulled it together, and my stomach rumbled, a reminder that we didn’t get to eat.

“We’d better get some food in there, before your stomach starts to eat you,” Skittles said, in an attempt at humour.

“You know, Nightingale might be a little jealous,” I say softly as we head back, unsure that facing Nightingale so soon might go down.

“How so?”

“Well, with her having breast cancer, she might be scared and feel vulnerable, and it’s life–threatening. As a medic, she might be weighing up all the negative things that can go wrong rather than the positive. It must be eating at her, making her lash out, and seeing how happy you were with Gold Nugget, him sitting on your lap. She might be jealous because she ruined it for herself, scared an already vulnerable and frightened child. We announce being together, glowing with life and future prospects, when she’s worried about the pending operation and a possible death sentence. Add all this together, and you get a short–tempered Nightingale that’s forgotten how to talk to people without thinking it through. She was always one to speak her mind. I can remember her often being told that she was too sharp. Put that together with you being sensitive and coming from a broken home, it was like water on burning hot oil; neither was going to mix. Think about it.” I watched Skittles nodding, as I talked, taking it in, but not giving any hint of what she was thinking.

Back in the dining hall, the plates we made were gone, so we grabbed a fresh lot. There was no sign of Nightingale or Blaze, but Nugget was still sitting there, observing everyone as they passed by the table, until he saw us approaching the table. The smile that broke over his face lit up his whole face. He didn’t leave his chair, but waited till we were seated, and we greeted Tempest, Storm, Skunk, and Journey before digging into our meal.

“Popcorn is going home, taking a bad lady with him,” Nugget announced when we had eaten almost half our meal.

I looked over at Storm, who nodded.

“Is she okay?” Skittle looked at Tempest, concern lacing her voice.

“Blaze thought it best if they left. After that episode at the table, we couldn’t see Nugget accepting her. Thank you for trying. You did well getting him to sit on her lap, but she’s the one who made a difficult situation worse. Nothing for you to be concerned about, besides, how are you? That was quite a speech.” Tempest chuckled at the end.

“Yeah, I am not going to doubt myself anymore. I promised myself, when we moved here, that I wouldn’t be that mouse hiding away. My brother did a lot of negotiating and work to get us away from that toxic place. I want to move forward and forget it.” The conviction in her voice had me looking at her with pride.

“You are officially a club member. Where mum isn’t, we have your back, before we have hers, and she knows this–part of why it was better for her to go home before the friendship became strained. You don’t visit another club and start that sort of nonsense. We invited them to come back when they have their problems sorted,” Skunk said. This was his mother we were talking about, and he was backing his club members over blood family. I have always respected him, but he keeps proving over and over again why he was my best friend.

“Thank you, Skunk.” Skittles smiled at him, a grateful look on her face.

“Nugget’s a good character reference; he chose you over Nightingale, forcing him to feel like his grandparents won’t work long term. Best she sorts herself out,” Tempest added. In the end, all agreed something was wrong with Nightingale and being here wouldn’t help her. She needed to go face her demons.

The doors to the clubhouse opened for the public, Storm left us to go to his office, duty calls, Tempest took Nugget for a ride around the backyard, trying to tire him out. He hadn’t had an afternoon nap and was getting edgy. We headed to the games room. I was going to teach her how to play pool. If there’s a table free, we have four tables, but they are popular. This room was not for the public. I am hoping that, with the doors open, most of the club members will be around the public to see if there are some new faces, like me; most are fed up with the same ones, all trying to get into their pants.

I secured a table, racked up the balls, checked out the cue sticks, rolled one on the table to see if it was straight, then handed it to Skittles.

“Hold the stick like this, and hit the ball in the center. Later, when you get proficient in playing, we will teach you trick shots.” I leaned over and broke the balls, cue ball, hit the first ball with a loud crack, sending the pack sprinting around the table. Skittles clapped when one went into the pocket. I had tried not to sink any, but failed.

“Now, let’s look at how the balls are on the table, and what ones might be easy to pot,” I explained
