Chapter 364

Skittles POV

All day, I was floating with happiness.

I had told my boss, Stanley, I was getting married this weekend, and he threw a lunch party to celebrate. The work was easy for me; I worked alone in the lab for most of it, keeping me away from where they were investigating my mother’s death. It was basic protocol when dealing with someone, you know. I could have handled the lover, because I don’t really know him, but Stanley didn’t want to risk any court having an excuse to throw it out of court.

As I was leaving, someone handed me a small package that had arrived. I thought it was a wedding gift, I thanked the girl handing it over, and stuffed it in my jacket. I will deal with it at home. I need to get out of here. I was stuck in the lab for an extra hour because the results were needed urgently, and so I waited and sent them to the person who was creating a file for the reports to hand over to whoever needed them.

Sprocket was there waiting for me, leaning against his bike, arms folded, and his left ankle over his right one. He looked relaxed as he watched me, with a soft smile and sparkling eyes that took my breath away. It was good to see him so relaxed and not searching the car park for trouble. We didn’t have anyone else with him; it was Sprocket alone, which was even better because that meant the threats might be gone.

At the last moment, he opened his arms, and I jumped into them. Could I refuse such an invitation? My man, I still can’t believe it, that by the weekend I will be Mrs Sprocket. Ha ha, that sounds funny, and good at the same time. My life has changed so fast, and it all started with my brother helping us move here. Even though I was scared and didn’t want to go, it has turned out to be the best thing ever. I got a man that I liked as a kid. I mean, it wasn’t love or anything. I was too young for that, but he played with me and didn’t always make me feel bad for having to be with them and never thought he saw me as anything more than a pain in his side, a girl joining his guys‘ time out, because mum needed us out of the house. Looking back at that time, she had wanted us out so she could play up. What Dad said made more sense than what the BS mum had been feeding us. I had time to think about it at work.

I climbed on the back of Sprocket, my arms circling his waist. He was too big to reach and grip my hands together, all four men were, and he took a longer ride, not heading home straight away, and ! loved that he did that, like he knew I needed to get some wind in my face and blow the work’s

stress away.

We arrived home, rode right up to our cottage, and parked in a small garage he had built there. It housed our bikes, and that was it. After I handed over my lid, he placed it near his, turned and pulled me in for more kisses. Hmmm, can’t get enough of those kisses. My stomach decided to

rumble. Sprocket chuckled on my lips.

“Not funny, you know me and my food.” He pulled out a packet of Skittles and handed them to me.

“You’re forgiven,” I said as I tore open the packet and tipped some into my mouth.

Dad and Stinger were seated at the kitchen table, waiting for us to arrive, dinner on the table.

“Wow, this was nice, thank you.” I beamed as I unzipped my jacket, and the package fell out.

“What’s this?” Dad asked, picking it up off the floor. I had forgotten that it was in my jacket. “I had cake for lunch, a boss’s treat for our pending marriage. He was thrilled. Stanley had been worried I would be distraught over seeing my mother like that, and was pleased I was handling it better than he expected. He doesn’t know much about my past. The package was given to me as I was leaving. Someone had dropped it off at the main office, I guess an early present.” Dad gave it back, and I put it aside to open after dinner.

It amazed me how fast things can progress, my wedding dress, bridesmaids, everything sorted, and I didn’t need to do a thing, or stress out. I loved it. Some might not appreciate having no say, and getting all upset, but if you lived the life I had, where you never did get a choice, and what was given was terrible, and you couldn’t refuse. I took this as someone doing something positive for me. It was good for a change, not bad at all. Good things can be good, like my brother getting us here to live, which meant they were trying to show me that someone taking over wasn’t always a bad thing. With work and stuff, I didn’t have time to think about it, and now I am thinking in circles.

I had a Friday off at work, to replace working on the weekend, a win–win for me, I didn’t need to request it off.

Dinner done, dishes cleared away, and time to sit and chat and catch up on family.

“Skittles, open that package. I am dying to know what’s in it,” Stinger asked, handing it to me. The outer wrapping was plain, my name clearly typed on a label, with the City Morgue department on it, no return address or hint as to who sent it.
