Maxine POV
Jenny’s reaction to Blaze at the door was about what I expected. When she wants a guy, she’s all in. It’s been a while since she has been this interested. The last one moved away. She was heartbroken, and because of that, she became a one-night-stand girl for a while. As she worked through her heartbreak, it was how she had always been.
It was good to see Blaze’s reaction; he looked just as pleased as she was. Carrying her out the door, in a hurry. Both absorbed in each other, her happiness was contagious. I was happy for her; she needed a new lover, and after my talk, although too brief, had helped me a lot, she always knew what to say.
Tank and I played pool, and I sipped one beer as we played. It was fun, and luckily, Tank was good at playing the game. I potted a few balls, but not to clear the table in one go; that wouldn’t be fun. We had lost a game because I think Tank had had enough and just wanted to watch, when Bruiser came to talk to Tank. I managed to catch a bit of it before he kissed me and left with him.
“Got to go, duty calls.” I didn’t argue or hold him back; I understood about duty. When it calls like this, he has to step up.
I went upstairs and stood outside of Prez and Sticks’ door, worried she wouldn’t open it.
I had to try.
Raising my hand, I paused, took a deep breath, and knocked on the door softly.
Waited a few minutes, raised my hand, and knocked again, a little harder, louder. Waited and did the same again. I wasn’t going anywhere now that I had put my mind to it.
They eventually opened, to a very sad-faced Sticks, her eyes red and puffy, her nose red and running.
“What do you want? Haven’t you caused enough trouble?” Her comment hurt me, and she went to close the door on me.
Nope, not taking it, not anymore. I didn’t cause this; she managed that all on her own.
So, I didn’t let it stop me from pushing the door open further and walking in. I was not going to take her crap anymore, and she needed to see that and deal with it if we were going to move forward from this. I am over being the mouse, too afraid to hurt someone else’s feelings; it did no good for me.
I looked around her room, which was the first time in here; she had made it a cozy, homely place. Baby gear was already being gathered in a corner, reminding me she was extra emotional because of her condition. Not a bad job, clean and tidy, except for the mountain of used tissues overflowing her small bin and the bed all messy, making me believe she had been lying in it.
“Sit,” I commanded, pushing her to one of the two chairs that she had in this room, by a small round table.
I then went through her mini kitchen, made her a sweet tea, and placed it in front of her. Then found a small bucket of ice cream in the little freezer, came to sit on the other chair, handed her a spoon, removed the lid, and pushed the ice cream over to her.
She had watched me move around her home, with the occasional sniffling noises, as she tried to get her tears under control.
First, she took a sip of the hot, sweet tea, eyeing me with suspicion.
I said nothing, just waited. For what I wasn’t sure, but didn’t think saying anything yet would go down well.
Eventually, Sticks grabbed the spoon and ice cream and started to eat.
“That was what Prez said, although not in those words. I like your thought on those two ladies, doing toilet duty for a week, they have managed to dodge that long enough, give some of the other ladies a break.” She sipped her tea and looked longingly at the empty ice cream container.
“Back in a sec.” I got up and left her room, walked next door to mine, grabbed two containers of ice cream I had in there, and returned, closing the door behind me.
“Strawberry and cream, or Rocky road?” I asked, being the only two choices I had left in the freezer.
“Rocky road.” I opened it and pushed it to her, went and grabbed another spoon, and sat beside her, eating the other one.
“Thank you,
you, I needed this, and thank you for being a friend. Cricket and Pins, try, but I am not as close as you might think. They follow me around because I am the Prez’s lady; if I weren’t, they wouldn’t have anything to do with me. They didn’t before I became his.” She sounds sad and lonely.
“I have few friends, Jenny being the main one, I was shocked that you choice those two, and not considered my Jenny, I think she and Blaze are going to be an item, you should have seen them both when he found out she was here, don’t be surprised if you don’t see them tomorrow, both most likely burning up the bed.” I chuckled as I told her off and gave it an out at the same time.
“I didn’t think, again I am sorry, and will try and make it up to you, if you will let me. I need a true friend who will tell me straight and not what they think I need to hear. Jenny will be a good addition to our club; she’s bubbly, and I can already see she has her head screwed on right. I wish I had seen it, instead of being in an argument with Prez, where is he by the way?” she asked as if she suddenly thought of him.
“Blind drunk in his office. I think Tank and Bruiser will lay him comfortable on that couch in there, and let him sleep it off.”
