“I see you’re still keeping the towel tradition.”

I turned sharply, heart skipping, to find Asher standing right beside the closed bedroom door. I froze.

He was here. Again.

And I didn’t know how to take that, didn’t know what it meant after everything he’d said the last time we were in this room. After he told me to run.

I didn’t know whether I should be scared or relieved. Was this good? Was it bad? I didn’t know. All I knew was that I was on high alert, every part of me bracing for what he’d do next. I had no idea what to say in response to his words, so I just stood there silently, wondering how long it would take me to bolt back into the bathroom.

“You do know Luca’s not here,” he said, his voice low and unreadable. “So you didn’t have to keep the towel tradition still going.”

I blinked, confused. “What does Luca have to do with this?”

“Nothing is going on between Luca and me,” I added quickly. “He told you himself—there was nothing.”

Asher pushed off the wall just slightly, still leaning there, his eyes fixed on me. “And still,” he said quietly, “even though there was nothing going on between you and him… you were there in your towel. With a full-blooded man. Because you do know he’s a man, right? Fully- blooded. And you do know you’re a beautiful woman. Hot by many people’s standards. And you were just… there. With your wet hair. Your towel. Leaving everything else to the imagination.”

I swallowed hard, my fingers tightening around the edge of the fabric. I didn’t know how to respond to that. I didn’t know how to answer that accusation.

But he wasn’t finished.

Still leaning, still watching, he said, “What were you trying to do, Ariella? Were you trying to seduce Luca?”

“No! Of course not,” I snapped, the words bursting out of me. “Why would you even think that?”

“Maybe because you wanted to use him?” Asher continued, his voice calm, but cutting.” Maybe you thought you could use him against me? Is that what you were thinking? That Luca was going to give all this up and run away with you? Maybe help you escape?”
