I clenched my jaw. “I’m not leaving my child’s memories behind,” I snapped.
The words left my mouth before I could stop them, and immediately, I felt Leon’s grip on my side tighten. I glanced down to find him clinging to me, his little hands fisting my jacket. He was tense. His big, innocent eyes were filled with fear.
And it hit me like a punch to the gut-I had scared him.
This whole trip must have been confusing for him. He didn’t understand what was happening. All he knew was that I had suddenly taken him on a trip with a strange man, and now we were at an airport, and I was arguing.
I had to calm down. I leaned down, pressing a kiss to the top of his head.
“Leon,” I said gently, “I’m just going to talk to my friend here. We’re just having a little disagreement. Can you stay in the car and wait for me?”
He nodded hesitantly, but his eyes remained sceptical as he looked at Luca. Still, he obeyed, climbing back into the car.
I shut the door and turned back to Luca, my voice.
“I’m not leaving my child’s memories behind. You can take my electronic devices, but let me bring his pictures.
Luca stared at me for a long moment, his expression unreadable. Then he turned and glanced at Leon through the car window. When he looked back at me, something in his eyes had softened-just a little.
“Fine,” he said. “You can take the pictures. But the phone stays.
I took a deep breath, knowing I had no other choice.
I understood why he was doing this. He didn’t want me to have any way to contact the outside world. Maybe he was afraid I’d try to escape again. Maybe he just wanted complete control over me.
Either way, I was walking into this with no way out.
We landed smoothly on top of a towering building, its blades slowing as Luca helped us down. The cool night an hit my skin as I took in my surroundings-steel and glass gleaming under city lights, the hum of distant traffic below.
Luca led us to an elevator, swiping a keycard before the doors slid open. We stepped inside and began our ascent.
When the elevator doors finally opened, we stepped into a breathtaking penthouse.
It was luxurious. Immaculate. A place you saw in magazines. Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked the city. The furniture was sleek and modern, the floors polished, Crystal chandeliers…
