Alan grinned. "You called me Romeo? I think I’m not that far off."
Maria sighed and turned to me. "Are we calling the police or not?"
"It’s fine, Maria," I said. "This is Dana’s brother. I don’t think you two have met yet but he is....."
"We have actually," Maria cut in. "Yesterday, remember? When you were busy ogling him?"
"She was ogling me?" Alan asked, clearly amused.
"Shut it," Maria snapped. "If you’re not taking him to the police, I’m going back to bed."
And with that, she disappeared into her room, muttering to herself.
Alan and I stood there in the hallway, staring at each other.
"I am so fucking sorry," he whispered.
"It’s okay," I whispered back. "But what were you doing? Climbing into her window?"
"Well," he said, sheepishly, "I kind of asked Dana where your room was in the house. She didn’t want to tell me, so I just thought I’d let luck decide. And… I think I was unlucky with this one."
Just then, his phone rang. He pulled it out, answered it quickly. "I’m on my way. I’m coming out right now." He hung up and slipped it back into his pocket.
"There’s a car waiting for me outside. I have to go now. But what I really wanted to say was..." He paused. "If I come back, it might not be next week, or even this month but would you go on a date with me?"
"What?" I blinked.
"I’m asking you to go on a date with me."
"I don’t think that’s a very good idea."
"Please," he said. "It’s only one date. If it doesn’t work, that’s fine. Just… don’t kill my ego, dear. Please. I know you’re very beautiful and if you don’t already have a boyfriend, you’re going to get one soon. So I’m just… putting my place in line, you know?"
I hesitated.
"Just promise you’ll go on a date with me when I come back."
"I really don’t know if that's q good idea."
"Please. I won’t leave if you don’t say yes."
"Is that a threat, mister?" I teased.
"I will go on my knees right now," he said seriously.
"Okay. Here’s my answer," I said at last. "Maybe."
"So maybe you will go on a date with me?"
"Yes."
"Yeah, you should be scared," Maria snapped. "What the fuck was that?"
"I don’t know, Maria, really." I sighed. "I didn’t know he was going to end up in your bedroom."
" Or what, you thought he was aiming for yours? You heard what he said," she said sharply. "That was not some ‘oops’ moment. That was not miscommunication."
I sighed again, walking slowly toward my door. "He’s a handsome man. So I looked. It’s not like I’m married. Or engaged."
Maria narrowed her eyes.
I quickly clamped my mouth shut.
"Listen to me, Ariella, I know this freedom is nice from being shackled out, shackled in one place for a very long time with your son and I don't know what's going on between you and Mr. Domenico and Luca. I don't know what's the triangle going on there...."
" Please, there's no triangle, Luca's just a friend."
" Yes, whatever it is that's going on there.... please don't forget who you are, don't forget why we are here, do not cause trouble for yourself. I have come to really like you and I really care for Leon..." She said her voice pleading.
" I don't know what the hell you're talking about, I didn't do anything..."
She leaned in just slightly, voice low and intense. "End this before blood spills. You know it won’t be pretty."
Then she turned, stormed into her room, and slammed the door.
I stood there for a moment, blinking.
