Chapter 28
“Who gave you permission to touch me?”
“Okay, all right….. I’m sorry, I won’t touch you, you’re gonna break my arm,” I shouted, my voice trembling, because the pressure on my wrist was getting stronger and unbearable.
And then he sat there on the bed, now facing me, his eyes cold and hard, as he asked me, his voice dangerously low,
“So what if I want to break your arm? What if I want to break your neck?” He said, letting go of my hand, the sudden release sending a wave of relief mixed with fear through me.
But then, just as quickly, his hands went towards my neck, the threat palpable. The glimpses of the man I once knew, had just faded, and now he’s gonna leave me with the stranger
“What if I want to break your neck? What if?” he asks, his voice a chilling whisper.
Then he pushes me aside, just as quickly, and lets me go, the unexpected release leaving me breathless. At least he didn’t actually try to choke me this time, a small victory.
He stands up, his movements sharp and precise, takes his jacket, smooth leather against his skin, and puts his phone in his pocket, while I stand there, frozen, getting a little confused.
“Where are you going?” I asked him, my voice barely a whisper.
“Who are you? I told you to shut the fuck up,” he snapped, his eyes flashing.
“Yes, but I spent nearly four hours preparing this lasagna, while Maria had already cooked lasagna today. I could have heated it up for you, but you said you wanted it cooked from scratch, and it is what I did, and it is here. Where are you going?” I demanded, my voice gaining a desperate edge.
Asher looked at me, his expression unreadable, before he said, his voice low, calm,
“Did you just shout at me?”
My eyes went wide, fear gripping me.
“What? No, I didn’t shout at you, I was just telling you-
“Shut it up,” he interrupted his voice a cold command.

I wanted to talk, to explain, but then I clamped my mouth shut, biting my lips in order to stop myself, from saying something back, from provoking him further.
He started heading away again, his back to me. There was no way he was going to do this to me….,
“Asher, come back here,” I pleaded, my voice breaking.
He stopped, froze, his body rigid, then turned back towards me, his eyes narrowed.
“You think you’re in control? You’re giving me instructions now? You’re commanding me?” As he said this, his eyes went towards the food, the tray on the bedside table.

“I don’t care if you cooked this food for two hours. I don’t care if you spent 14. I don’t care if you spent 28 hours. I don’t care if you spent a week cooking this food, okay?….. In fact, why are you so concerned about me eating it? Why do you really want me to eat it?”
He asked his voice full of accusation and suspicion.
“Because it’s not good to waste food and I was already going to sleep. I’m so tired. You made me cook this and now you’re gonna leave?”
“You know what? You’re right. We shouldn’t waste food. So go on, sit your ass down.”
“What?”
“Sit your ass down and eat that damn lasagna.”
“I already ate. I’m full….”
T
“said sit the fuck down now and eat that damn food!” I knew he was threatening me.
I could see the danger. I could smell it. So I sat down, cut a piece, put it on my plate and I started eating.
I made this food for him. I cooked it with love. I cooked it with care and now I was eating it all on my own. I couldn’t help the tears that fell from my eyes.
“I want you to finish it all, not a single piece left,” he added when I was done with my piece.
I cut a second piece. I started eating that one too while he just stood there staring at me and it seemed as though he was looking past me, through me and not feeling anything.
Does that mean that Asher no longer has feelings for me anymore? Then why am I still in love with him? Why did he move on while I stood stuck waiting for a miracle, a hope, however small, for the two of us to be together again even though I knew,, in reality it couldn’t happen.
