Chapter 31
Five years Ago
Asher then announced, but he wasn’t just talking to me-he was talking to the crowd.
“All right, sweetheart. What’s your name?”
“Ariella.”
“Ariella? What’s your family name?”
“My father’s Antonio… Antonio Costa.”
“I don’t think I know them.” He said it like he was trying to work his head around it like he couldn’t place us.
He wasn’t going to get it. My family was so low in rank, we wouldn’t have even crossed his mind.
“When’s this prom thing again?”
“Next month. The 14th.”
“Okay, I’ll be there. Don’t worry. I’m a good date. I’ll bring the flowers and all that shit.”
And with that, he walked into the toilet, leaving me there.
My eyes were wide, and the people around me? Their eyes were wide too. Most of us went to the same school and knew the same people, and everyone was in shock.
Was that real?
My friend Francesca came towards me, her eyes nearly popping out of her head
“Was that real? pinch me.”
“I don’t know,” I said, pulling her away from the scene.
I didn’t want Asher to come back and find me still standing there. I was too hyped. Too confused. Too excited.
But, what do you know? He really did come on prom. Just like he promised.
He brought the flowers. He had a corsage. He agreed to take pictures with me. He held my hand.
Although I thought my father was kind of intimidated by having the Don’s son in his house, he still let him in. When I told him about Asher taking me to prom, He was praying Asher wouldn’t come, but Asher did. And a bigger part of me was surprised too.
Asher came.
My parents-well, they didn’t know what to make of him. He was 21, in college. But even with that, my parents could tell he wasn’t like other boys in our world.
“Aren’t you going to take our pictures?” Asher asked when he came to get me and it seemed like no one knew what to do with his presence.

Asher gave me flowers. He talked to my parents with respect, and even asked about their expectations for the evening. And when he took my hand to lead me away, I could see my father’s discomfort.
He was a religious man, and I know he was worried. Asher must have seen the look on his face and told him, calmly,
“You don’t have to worry about me. I’ll adhere to the rules. I’ll respect your family’s expectations.” S
My father nodded and said to both of us, but facing me,
“I want you to adhere to the rules of the family, to our expectations, and not do anything we wouldn’t approve of.”
We both nodded and Asher said, “Yes, sir. I wouldn’t dream of breaking your trust.”
It was actually a very, very entertaining night, and I had the best time of my life.
Later into the night, I think Asher kind of opened up to me. He didn’t come with his anger vibes, and he was a good date. He attended to me. He made sure I had a drink. He made sure I had something to eat. He made sure I didn’t drink the alcohol punch. He escorted me to the toilet. He danced with me. He even danced with my friends.
And what do you know? He knew the teachers.
Of course, he knew the teachers. The school belonged to the Mafia. They were all surprised to see me with Asher there, as my date. I think even my classmates weren’t expecting that Asher would actually show up.
