ASHER
He frowned, studying me carefully with those observant eyes of his, like he was trying to figure out something complicated.
“You told me we are going to the city,” Leon said frowning. I guess he could see my frustration.
“Yes, and you were asleep, dreaming about ice cream and everything nice,” I replied, gathering every ounce of patience I had left, even though he had just completely cock-blocked me.
“Well..... where’s Mom? We should go,” he insisted.
“You just woke up,” I reminded him. “You haven’t had your snack, you haven’t bathed, and you need to change.”
He hummed thoughtfully. “Okay… and what about you? You were sleeping again. Where are the rest of your clothes? Why do you and Mom sleep all the time? You should be bathed, already dressed..... and taking care of me.”
I raised an eyebrow at him before crouching down to his level.
“You know what?” I said. “Let’s make a deal.”
He tilted his head, curious.
“Why don’t you go take a shower and get dressed? In fact, you know what? Select three pairs of clothes you would like to wear. Think about it carefully before you put them on. And when you’re done, go find William and ask him how you look. If you’re sure you look perfect, come knock on this door… and if you look as magnificent as you think you do, I’ve got a whole container of ice cream waiting for you.”
Leon blinked at me.
“I don’t understand,” he said after a moment, staring at me as if I had just spoken another language.
God… had no one ever bribed Leon in his life?
This was the moment he learned, I decided. He was six, maybe he was late to the training, I started way earlier. Here I was, trying to bribe him, and he had absolutely no idea what I was talking about.
I doubted threatening him would work either, but at this point, I was desperate. As much as I wanted to cuddle him.....since he had just ruined a perfectly good moment, I figured he deserved a small life lesson.
“So here’s the thing,” I said, switching tactics. “If you don’t do exactly what I tell you.... You and I, tomorrow morning, six sharp, because you’re still a newbie — we’re going running.”
“Running?” he asked, his eyes widening.
He looked afraid.
Good, I thought.
“Yes. Running. Do you know Dad goes running every morning at five? I go through the whole estate while you’re sleeping in your cute little car bed. But you know what? That ends tomorrow. So go do what I told you before I start adding chores you’ll be doing tomorrow morning too.”
As I said, I nodded to myself, feeling proud.
