ASHER
I didn’t like this.
I didn’t like how everything was unfolding, how everything was happening, but I was the Don of the Romano Famiglia, and I would not let down my famiglia.
I would not let my family down.
My son.
My wife.
The love of my life.
No. I became Don....the youngest Don to ever lead the Romano Famiglia—because I was strong, calculating and smart about every move. That's how I gained power. knew
Some men thought they could take that power from me.....They were mistaken. And they paid for it with their blood.
So this… this wasn’t surprising. Someone testing me again. Someone was thinking I had weakened. Maybe they believed I wasn’t the same man I was when I first became Don.
Back then, I was ruthless. I didn’t care for consequences. I was untouchable. I cared about nothing except power. But now..... Now I had something to lose.
Every move I made, every decision I took, had to be carefully calculated. Carefully curated. Because lives were at risk. Lives are more precious than anything else in the world. I didn’t care what happened to me. But if something happened to me… I knew it would destroy them. Irrevocably. And that was why I had to be careful this time.
The moment the car doors shut, Ariella’s warmth, her scent, and Leon’s voice all faded behind the cold discipline I had carried for years.
For years. I leaned back against the leather seat, my eyes drifting toward the tinted windows as the car pulled out of the gates and away from the estate. I adjusted the cuff of my jacket, trying to rein in my thoughts.
Because my mind wasn’t on the mission. It was still at the front door, still with Ariella. Her fingers are gripping my jacket. The way she held me.
I knew she tried to hide her fear, but I felt her trembling. I saw it in her eyes.
She didn’t want me to leave.
She wanted me to stay.
But then I also remembered the moment the cars started moving, the way she straightened her shoulders instantly. She is Strong. Too strong.
She knew at that moment she couldn’t show weakness. She knew she had to be strong for me. For us. For our son.
My jaw tightened. I never wanted to put her in this position. But this was the life we lived.
I meant what I told her. I am coming back. I always will. Because there is no version of this life where I don’t return to her arms.
My phone rang and I picked it up.
“Yes, Luca. Tell me what’s going on.”
“Everything is set,” Luca responded. “I’m waiting for you. We need to talk to the guard so we can start preparing for your meeting tonight.”
“I’m almost there,” I said before hanging up.
We were heading to Luca’s mansion. When I needed a place to conduct business outside my official offices, Luca volunteered his house. It became a place where only family met, where famiglia business was handled quietly.
He lived two blocks from my estate. Underground, we had already constructed a tunnel connecting his mansion to mine. In this life, you always need a Plan B. Experience has taught us that.
The gates opened as we arrived, and the guards let us through immediately. The driver stepped out and opened my door and I walked inside. Luca greeted me at the entrance and immediately began leading me toward the basement where the guard was being held.
“What did you say his name was again?” I asked.
“Fabio Tatticcu,” Luca replied. “His father died when he was eighteen, just after he was inducted. He lives with his mother and two younger sisters.”
“Okay. What else?” I asked. “Gambling? Alcohol? Women? Cars?”
“He doesn’t gamble. Drinks occasionally. He just got engaged, so no on the women.”
